About the Role
Ashby is seeking a Design Engineer who is equally skilled in both design and engineering to join a specialized team that bridges these disciplines. This position involves tackling complex design challenges, enhancing and expanding our proprietary design system, and collaborating closely with product engineers on tailored design tasks. You will work at the intersection of UI/UX and software development, creating products used by over 100,000 weekly active users, supporting clients such as Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake.
Key Responsibilities
- Redesigning the mobile web application by gathering user insights, sketching wireframes, applying and extending the design system, and building refined user interfaces.
- Constructing flexible, modular components within the design system to facilitate consistent and beautiful UI elements for various product sections.
- Advising product engineers to improve usability through better information architecture and visual hierarchy, allowing recruiters to quickly analyze candidate assessments.
Candidate Profile and Expectations
- This role demands a combination of strong design skills and the ability to implement technical solutions with code.
- You should embrace iterative development, shipping quickly to subsets of users and adapting based on feedback instead of exhaustive pre-release testing.
- Excellent visual design acumen is required, continually raising the standard for the product's interface.
- The role requires self-driven project ownership rather than relying on structured sprint planning or rigid processes.
- A willingness to participate in diverse responsibilities, including customer support and issue investigation.
- Applicants who focus exclusively on design systems, perfectionism, or process-driven work are less likely to thrive.
Levels and Experience
- Junior Design Engineer: Up to 2 years of professional experience in design or engineering, with demonstrated projects exhibiting strong visual taste and emerging skills in UI/UX and coding.
- Design Engineer (Mid to Senior): A minimum of 2 years continuous industry experience with a solid balance of design and engineering expertise, supported by projects impacting multiple users.
- Staff Design Engineer: Experienced professionals who have contributed significantly to design systems and feature implementations at scale, iterating based on user feedback.
Product Vision and Engineering Culture
At Ashby, we develop powerful Talent Acquisition software that streamlines complex recruiting workflows. Our engineering culture emphasizes minimal process, high ownership, natural collaboration, and purposeful communication to foster rapid, high-quality software delivery within regular working hours.
- Engineers handle entire projects end-to-end, from problem research and specification to design and implementation.
- We prioritize focus time with less than 2 hours of meetings weekly and bi-annual in-person gatherings.
- Investments in developer tooling dramatically increase efficiency, allowing 15+ deployments daily with quick CI/CD cycles.
- AI is leveraged to automate routine tasks like issue triage, code generation, and review, empowering engineers without imposing metrics.
- Commitment to diversity is manifest in inclusive hiring, leadership representation, and supportive policies.
Interview Process
The hiring process involves three rounds focusing on showcasing your work, technical or design challenges, and detailed discussions on previous work. There are no coding or whiteboard algorithms required.
