Position Overview

The Editorial Intern will support ONC’s goal of delivering unbiased news, opinion pieces, and policy recommendations by performing key editorial duties. Working closely with the Editorial Team Lead and Managing Editor, the intern will review all ONC produced content—ranging from books and policy proposals to op-eds and newsletters—for grammatical accuracy, stylistic consistency, and factual correctness. This role requires collaboration with Policy Content Writers and other team members, while maintaining clear, ongoing communication regarding project progress and deadlines.

This internship is fully remote, with responsibilities carried out mainly via Zoom and Slack. Candidates must be comfortable in a virtual workspace and maintain a high communication standard. There may be opportunities to learn website backend operations to manage and approve submissions from external writers.

Responsibilities

  • Proofread and edit written materials to ensure grammatical correctness across the ONC website and mobile application.
  • Guarantee all published content upholds ONC's principles of nonpartisanship, promotes ideological diversity, and fosters civil discourse.
  • Engage constructively with writers holding diverse political perspectives, including conservative, progressive, and moderate views.
  • Collaborate with script and core content writers to maintain a uniform tone and style throughout all materials.
  • Verify factual information in texts to prevent errors and uphold accuracy.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled student pursuing an academic degree in English, Literature, Political Science, Journalism, Communications, or a related discipline.
  • Outstanding writing skills in English are essential.
  • Effective verbal communication abilities are advantageous.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Prior experience in editing, ideally with familiarity in AP style guidelines.
  • Capable of consistent, responsive communication.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a remote environment while meeting deadlines.
  • Experience with Google Workspace is preferred.
  • Availability to participate in biweekly Organization-Wide meetings and weekly Editorial Team meetings.
  • Authorization to intern in the United States is required.

Additional Information

A competency editing assessment will be administered to finalists during interviews, requiring corrections of grammatical and style issues in a sample article.
