Job Overview
The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for creating and developing electronic enclosures intended for aero gas turbine engines. This role involves ensuring that enclosure designs align with project specifications from initial concept to qualification testing. The engineer will support both local and global Rolls-Royce engine programs and be involved at various project stages including conceptualization, design, prototyping, testing, and final manufacturing.
Work Environment
This position requires a hybrid working pattern with onsite presence in the Indianapolis, IN office approximately three days per week. Rolls-Royce emphasizes an inclusive, innovative, and collaborative culture that encourages professional growth and career development.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with electronic engineering teams to design enclosures meeting combined mechanical and electronic requirements.
- Create detailed technical drawings and 3D CAD models to assist project execution and manufacturing compliance.
- Lead and coordinate technical and design reviews, prepare and deliver presentations and technical reports communicating design solutions.
- Conduct trade studies for new and existing hardware, assess functional and physical interfaces, and define analysis needs for enclosure designs.
- Ensure adherence to product certification standards such as RTCA/DO-160 and MIL-STD-810.
- Perform mechanical analyses like vibration and thermal studies to confirm design suitability for operational environments.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering with a minimum of 2 years of design experience, or Master's degree, or Doctorate (JD/PhD) in Engineering.
- U.S. Citizenship is mandatory to apply for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five or more years of experience in designing and manufacturing electronic enclosures.
- Familiarity with aero gas turbine control systems.
- Experience with New Product Introduction (NPI) processes.
- Proficiency in CAD software, including Siemens NX and ANSYS.
- Knowledge of finite element analysis (FEA), vibration analysis, and thermal analysis.
- Competence in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Understanding of design procedures and component testing methods.
- Experience translating high-level design requirements into validated mechanical designs.
Compensation and Benefits
Annual salary ranges from $94,160 to $153,010.
