About Counterpart
Counterpart is an innovative insurtech platform reinventing management and professional liability solutions for the contemporary workplace. By combining advanced AI with deep insurance expertise, we proactively identify, mitigate, and manage risk. Supported by A-rated insurers and trusted by brokers across the country, our platform empowers small businesses to grow confidently and efficiently.
Your Role
As a Technical Product Manager at Counterpart, you will take ownership of the product strategy for a specific Pod. You will engage directly with brokers, carriers, internal collaborators, and customers to identify critical needs. These insights are translated into initiatives, which you break down into actionable projects accompanied by high-level product requirements. You will collaborate closely with an Engineering Lead to develop feasible plans that align resource allocation and staffing.
Once projects are approved and funded, a Project Lead will expand the requirements. Your responsibility is to verify the project continues to address the intended problems and then focus on outcomes rather than day-to-day execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the roadmap for your Pod by discovering meaningful problems through direct conversations with stakeholders such as brokers, carriers, partners, and customers.
- Convert business goals into concrete initiatives that impact performance metrics, navigating planning cycles and resource allocation.
- Track and report progress on business outcomes, discontinuing ineffective initiatives as needed.
- Decompose initiatives into clear, deliverable projects with sufficient high-level requirements for planning and resource assignment.
- Coordinate with other Technical Product Managers to avoid duplication and promote shared solutions.
- Partner with Engineering Leads who handle the technical approach, while you focus on the product's purpose and rationale.
- Estimate project scope via rough sizing (e.g., multi-month or single-month durations) and define achievable monthly milestones.
- Lead reviews for each funded project, ensuring the scope, user experience, and problem-solving objectives remain appropriate, including collaboration across Pods.
- Maintain availability to support Project Leads during iterative development without over-scheduling meetings.
- Design workflows incorporating AI, clarifying roles for automation versus human involvement, managing error responses, escalations, and feedback loops—this is a fundamental aspect of the role.
- Evaluate interdisciplinary prototypes and ideas, selecting those with viable business cases and strategic alignment.
- Promote user adoption of Pod deliverables through documentation, training sessions, demonstrations, and office hours.
- Monitor product usage and outcomes post-launch, using data to optimize priorities and future development.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Proven experience spearheading product areas in insurtech, B2B SaaS, or regulated sectors, including making prioritization decisions that sometimes involve discontinuing promising ideas.
- Demonstrated success in driving product adoption beyond initial launch, with a focus on measuring results.
- Experience managing product workflows that are fundamentally redesigned by AI technologies, including decisions about human oversight and intervention.
- Solid technical understanding to collaborate with engineering teams on AI-powered solutions, with knowledge of system boundaries, data flows, and trade-offs without needing coding skills.
- Comfortable leveraging AI tools in your daily work processes.
- Ability to effectively communicate complex concepts between business stakeholders and engineers while preserving meaning.
- Interest or background in insurance, preferably familiarity with the Managing General Agent (MGA) model or eagerness to learn about it.
- High emotional intelligence and humility, skilled at influencing without authority and receptive to feedback.
- Experience working in a distributed, fully remote team environment.
Working Relationships
- Tanner Hackett, CEO & Founder, experienced entrepreneur and philanthropist focused on mental health.
- Chris Shafer, Chief of Staff, with a scientific background and diverse business experience.
- Dave Lin, Head of Product and Engineering, seasoned in scaling B2B platforms with advanced degrees in electrical engineering.
Benefits and Culture
