Data Scientist

Overview

The University of Utah Health Research invites applications for skilled Data Scientist positions based in Salt Lake City, UT. As data scientists, candidates will apply advanced statistical methods, machine learning algorithms, programming expertise, and mathematical techniques to explore and analyze complex, high-dimensional datasets. The goal is to detect patterns, identify business and research opportunities, formulate questions, and create valuable prototypes and product enhancements. Roles involve designing, developing, and validating predictive models and sophisticated algorithms to maximize data utility. Candidates will also generate and assess hypotheses and interpret experimental results, collaborating closely with product engineers to convert prototypes into scalable products and features.

Position Levels and Qualifications

The department may consider hiring at three tiers depending on expertise and experience:

• Data Scientist I (Entry-Level): Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent plus 2 years related experience, or a master's degree or equivalent. Responsibilities include producing solutions under close supervision and limited independent decision-making.
• Data Scientist II (Developing): Requires a bachelor's degree plus 4 years or a master's degree plus 2 years of related experience. Tasks involve handling more complex assignments with moderate supervision and some autonomy.
• Data Scientist III (Career Level): Requires a bachelor's degree plus 6 years or a master's degree plus 4 years of related experience. This senior level entails complex assignments, minimal supervision, and high independent judgment.

An equivalency statement allows substituting one year of higher education for one year of related work experience. A master's degree is preferred across all levels.

Employment Details

• Location: Salt Lake City campus
• Standard work schedule: 40 hours per week, daytime shift
• Pay range: $75,000 to $105,000 annually, depending on level
