Model Maker

About the Role

The R&D Model Maker plays a critical part in product development and ongoing product support, working closely with engineers and other team members to meet project objectives. A significant aspect of this position involves machining parts, sometimes without detailed drawings, where the Model Maker also contributes to technical specifications and design processes for new products within a collaborative environment. Responsibilities include development and refinement of prototype mechanisms. Detailed drawings are provided for parts to be machined or fabricated, and the Model Maker participates in fabrications that are cost-efficient while meeting or surpassing the established specifications. Additionally, the role encompasses manufacturing support, value engineering, and enhancement of products. Excellent problem-solving capabilities and staying current with advancements in relevant expertise areas are expected.

Key Responsibilities

• Participate in the product design phase by offering fabrication expertise, machining prototypes, and advising on material choices.
• Create prototypes that accurately meet specifications based on engineering models and detailed drawings.
• Interpret technical drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions to machine and fabricate parts and assemblies with precision and to close tolerances.
• Skilfully and safely operate a variety of machine shop equipment such as milling machines, lathes, surface grinders, band saws, hand tools, CNC machines, EDM, lasers, 3D printers, and measuring instruments.
• Assist in troubleshooting and improving prototype functionality and product issues.
• Provide ongoing manufacturing support for existing product lines.
• Engage in cost reduction initiatives via value engineering on both new and existing products.
• Adhere strictly to safety protocols and promote safe work practices throughout all tasks.
• Maintain work environments to predefined standards as set by environmental engineering parameters.
• Keep workspaces, tools, and equipment clean and orderly at all times.
• Uphold confidentiality requirements related to projects and department information.
• Perform additional assigned tasks as required.

Qualifications and Skills

• Completion of Trade or Technical School diploma focused on machinery operation.
• Minimum of 2 years of CNC machining experience within a machine shop setting.
• Competency in fundamental math and geometric concepts related to machine design and fabrication.
• Proficiency using precision measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers.
• Experience with CAD software; preference given to SolidWorks 3D.
