Role overview
Canada Post is seeking a community-focused Postmaster to oversee a group office in River of Ponds, Newfoundland and Labrador. In this role, you will serve as the local face of the post office, reporting to the Superintendent/Local Area Manager and balancing customer service, sales, administration, and day-to-day operational oversight.
The position is permanent, full-time, and requires English proficiency. It is part of the Retail business function and classified as RVSGA20 - Level 2.
Key duties
- Build and maintain strong connections with the local community regarding Canada Post products and services.
- Market and sell postal products and services to individuals and businesses.
- Operate the post office within retail opening hours and expected delivery timelines.
- Oversee postal revenue, assets, and other entrusted values.
- Keep records current and prepare required reports.
- Support the management of mail delivery routes.
- Sort mail into postal boxes when needed.
- Supervise staff, if required.
- Keep the office tidy, professional-looking, and compliant with Canada Post cleanliness standards.
- Run the office carefully, efficiently, and with due diligence.
Qualifications and requirements
- Completion of high school, provincial equivalency, and/or experience in business administration.
- Experience dealing with the public in a retail or service setting, including sales and cash handling.
- Working knowledge of rules, methods, and procedures for mail processing and postal service delivery.
- Ability to lift mail containers weighing up to 50 lb, push or pull boxes, sort mail, and stand for long periods.
- Ability to provide suitable premises in a central location within the community within 30 days if selected.
- Owned or leased premises that are suitable, centrally located, and barrier-free must be available for review and approval at least one month before hire.
- Appointments are subject to the Canada Post Act.
Premises and operating conditions
The premises must be fully accessible to persons with disabilities. Postmasters are responsible for rent or lease payments, heating, lighting, cleaning, routine general maintenance, snow removal, municipal taxes, and the required property and liability insurance coverage. The hours of service to the public are set by Canada Post and may change depending on circumstances.
Working hours
Scheduled hours are Monday to Wednesday from 10:00 to 14:00, Thursday from 14:00 to 18:00, and Friday from 10:00 to 14:00. The role totals 20.0 hours per week.
Compensation and allowances
The pay rate is $22.10 per hour. A leasing allowance of $2,914.00 per year is provided to help offset operating costs for the post office. An additional annual supplemental allowance may also be available to help cover costs related to providing the premises.
Other information
Priority consideration will be given to transfer requests from CPAA members, with preference for members in the posted area of competition. For competition purposes, CPAA members in the posted area of competition receive priority consideration. Term employees with continuous employment in CPAA may apply in line with the Collective Agreement.
