About Corlann and the Role
Corlann's West Region is seeking Locum Relief Support Workers to serve Galway City and County. The appointed candidates will be allocated to either center-based residential/day services or community settings depending on service demands.
Key Responsibilities
Support Workers play a vital key-working role assisting people supported by the services. The position encompasses two main duties: firstly, attending to all daily personal care needs including meal assistance and hygiene to support physical wellbeing; secondly, aiding service users in progressing through their Individual Plans and realizing associated outcomes. Additionally, the role critically involves facilitating community participation and social integration for those supported.
Additional Context
The Bruach Na Mara Service located in the Gaeltacht region of South Connemara provides support to individuals with intellectual disabilities, enabling them to live in their native areas among family and friends, fostering full community engagement.
Reporting Structure
The role reports to the Staff Nurse in charge, Team Leader, Team Manager, or Service Coordinator.
Qualifications and Experience
- Candidates must hold a solid general education background. A recognized qualification in intellectual disability or FETAC Level 5 certification is advantageous.
- Possession of a full clean manual driving license for Irish roads and use of a personal vehicle is mandatory. Applicants may also need to acquire a Class D1 license, with support provided for this process.
- Fluency in both spoken and written English is essential.
- Experience working with people with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviors is desirable; full training will be offered.

Work Schedule and Conditions
Work hours can total up to 39 per week based on a seven-day and night roster. Candidates must be ready to work mornings, evenings, weekends, public holidays, night shifts, and overnight sleep-ins as needed to meet service requirements.
Leave and Remuneration
Annual leave entitlement is 23 days pro rata per annum. Salary aligns with Department of Health scales effective 01/06/2026: Care Assistant Disability Services position ranges from €34,881 to €47,624 annually (prorated for part-time). After three years on the top increment, a Long Service Increment raises pay to €48,434 (pro rata). Extra compensation is available for weekend, public holiday, sleep-in, and night duty shifts worked. The salary basis assumes a 39-hour workweek, with potential incremental credit given for prior verified public sector experience.
Tenure and Probation
This locum panel will operate on an on-call basis to cover various staff leaves within the services. A nine-month probation period applies, during which employment may be terminated if deemed unsuitable. Extension of probation is at employer discretion.
