Role Overview

Key Responsibilities
- Design, construct, and operate sophisticated optical test systems for evaluating photonic integrated circuits and components relevant to scalable quantum processors.
- Interpret measurement results to detect performance patterns and supply constructive insights to photonic design and manufacturing teams.
- Manage collaboration efforts with external partners for chip packaging, assembly, and delegated testing processes.
- Work closely with photonic engineers, quantum scientists, and fabrication experts to optimize design, production, packaging, and testing integration.
- Contribute to laboratory and cleanroom upkeep by adhering to documentation, quality control, and cleanliness standards.
- Drive continuous enhancement of characterization methods, automation tools, and testing infrastructure.
- Assist the photonic design team via numerical simulation, optimization analyses, and input on photonic integrated circuit layouts.
Candidate Profile
- A master's degree or doctorate in Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related area.
- Practical experience with optical setups including fiber coupling, laser alignment, interferometry, waveguide loss measurements, polarization studies, and optical spectrum analysis.
- Solid knowledge of integrated photonic devices such as waveguides, gratings, couplers, resonators, and beam splitters.
- Strong analytical mindset with a methodical and practical approach to experimental work.
- Basic familiarity with numerical simulations and optimization applied to photonic structures is preferred.
Desirable Skills
- Experience in photonics or optics research and development settings.
- Proficiency in automation of measurements and data processing, with Python as an example tool.
- Handling free-space and fiber-based optical systems.
- Use of simulation software including Ansys Lumerical (FDTD, MODE, INTERCONNECT) or COMSOL Multiphysics for optics and heat transfer.
- GDS design capabilities for photonic integrated circuits.
- Familiarity with integrated photonic platforms like silicon nitride, silicon-on-insulator, or indium phosphide.
- Experience pertaining to photonic devices in cryogenic or ultra-high vacuum conditions.
- Knowledge of semiconductor microfabrication technologies such as spin coating, photolithography, etching, thin film deposition, and wafer processing.
