Role Overview
As an Applications Engineering Specialist based in London, Ontario, you will work closely with the Sales Team and clients to develop detailed automation solutions and competitive quotations that secure new business. Your responsibilities include assessing customer requirements, analyzing production processes, designing mechanical concepts, preparing estimated bills of materials (BOMs), and ensuring solutions align with customer standards. You will liaise with suppliers and internal engineering teams to support accurate costing, explain proposals to customers and internal stakeholders, and contribute to process improvements while staying informed on emerging technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Adhere to sales procedures to prepare detailed, professionally packaged quotations that attract business.
- Thoroughly analyze customer applications and requirements to create optimized automation concepts.
- Review customer documentation including RFQs, scopes of work, and equipment specifications; conduct site visits and evaluate previously delivered equipment to ensure compliance and suitability.
- Develop mechanical design concepts at cell and station levels along with preliminary BOMs.
- Engage with customer technical contacts to understand needs and foster strong relationships.
- Identify critical project components for sourcing and prepare RFQs for supplier quotations.
- Collaborate with internal engineering teams for concept enhancement when necessary.
- Detail cost estimations for time and materials required for project elements to support accurate quoting.
- Assist in presenting quotations to customers and internal teams, clarifying concepts and budgets.
- Conduct sales presentations and occasionally lead facility tours for clients and prospects.
- Participate in project kickoff meetings and concept reviews, providing detailed budget and scope explanations.
- Complete daily timesheets for accurate cost tracking and submit weekly expense reports timely.
- Organize and maintain quote documentation and files systematically.
- Analyze previous projects and quotations for continuous improvement opportunities.
- Contribute to developing improved team standards, methodologies, and tools.
- Identify inefficiencies in quoting and processes, proposing solutions to boost productivity and reduce stress.
- Continuously research new technologies to offer customers the most effective solutions.
- Maintain broad knowledge of automated products and their industrial applications.
- Provide training and mentorship to colleagues, sharing expertise to strengthen the company’s capabilities.
- Follow the ACE principle to address and escalate problems effectively: commit to an action, compel teammates if deliverables are at risk, and escalate issues with facts and proposed resolutions if required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, Engineering Technology, or a closely related technical discipline.
- Over 3 years of experience in applications engineering, mechanical design, automation, systems integration, or custom machinery development.
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks for mechanical concept development, layout planning, and BOM estimation in automation projects.
- Solid understanding of industrial automation systems, manufacturing workflows, and custom machinery design principles.
- Experience interpreting customer specifications and preparing technical proposals, quotations, and cost evaluations.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to craft pragmatic, client-centered automation strategies.
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills essential for collaborating with clients, suppliers, and internal engineering teams.
- Availability to travel to customer sites for application assessments, quotation presentations, project kickoffs, and related activities as needed.
