Overview
This entry-level role involves performing specialized data processing, technical, and clerical duties within a local election office. The trainee will learn and apply election laws, policies, and procedures, gaining expertise in election-related software systems. The position requires close supervision by election administrative staff and emphasizes confidentiality, discretion, and judgment. Some duties may involve traveling to community locations such as schools and nursing homes. Evening and weekend work may be necessary, especially around election periods.
Key Responsibilities
- Acquire proficiency in accurate data entry in accordance with Statewide Voter Registration System protocols.
- Organize and prioritize tasks to ensure timely completion following office guidelines.
- Identify and report discrepancies or issues during data processing.
- Learn voter registration procedures and respond to related inquiries.
- Assist, as trained, in recruiting election judges, organizing training sessions, maintaining and preparing voting equipment, evaluating polling sites for compliance, managing inventory and supplies, and processing candidate and committee filings.
- Complete clerical tasks typical of election office operations.
- Perform additional related responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent certificate.
- At least six months’ general office experience involving data entry, filing, telephone communication, computer, and email usage. Alternatively, completion of 30 college credit hours may substitute this experience.
- Preferred qualifications include familiarity with Microsoft Office, the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, experience managing multiple tasks, data entry skills, and public communication abilities.
Licensing and Special Requirements
- If duties require, a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license must be held.
- Candidates must be registered voters in Maryland compliant with state election law.
- Candidates cannot hold or be running for any elective public or political office under Maryland law.
Selection & Examination Process
Applicants must submit complete information showcasing their qualifications by the deadline. The selection involves evaluating education, training, and experience related to this job and ranking candidates accordingly. The resulting eligibility list remains active for at least one year.
