About the Role
This role is for an experienced Level Designer located in Canada, working on a cooperative horror exploration game. The position involves crafting immersive and high-caliber gameplay experiences by shaping atmospheric environments, designing memorable encounters, and creating dynamic player-driven moments from initial concept through to final polish. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams such as design, narrative, art, audio, and engineering is key to realizing the creative vision.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with systems design, narrative, art, engineering, audio, and production teams to implement the creative vision and resolve design challenges during development.
- Create and develop levels covering all stages including concept, implementation, iteration, testing, and final refinement; this includes level layouts, encounters, traversal, pacing, and player flow.
- Design immersive environments that foster exploration, collaboration, navigation, and discovery while delivering impactful horror gameplay moments.
- Collaborate with narrative teams to integrate story elements, objectives, environmental storytelling, scripted sequences, and interactive gameplay moments.
- Implement gameplay events, puzzles, encounters, progression mechanisms, and environmental interactions supporting both cooperative and solo player experiences.
- Conduct testing, debugging, and refinement of levels to address navigation, pacing, visual clarity, progression, and overall player engagement.
- Incorporate feedback from internal reviews and playtests to enhance level design, immersion, tension, and gameplay clarity.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of gameplay systems and their connection with level design to develop levels that are flexible, replayable, and engaging.
Candidate Requirements
- Minimum of five years of professional experience in the game development industry, with significant focus on level design for exploration, action, horror, or cooperative game genres.
- Contributed to at least one released game title, preferably involving exploration, environmental storytelling, or cooperative gameplay.
- Possess deep knowledge of level design principles such as player guidance, pacing, spatial storytelling, progression, and encounter design.
- Experience using level editors, scripting tools, and integrating gameplay systems within game engines.
- Ability to manage assigned content independently, address design challenges efficiently, and iterate within established production schedules.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, capable of collaborating with designers, artists, engineers, audio experts, and narrative personnel.
- A passion for building immersive gameplay experiences and an appreciation for the role various disciplines play in creating memorable player moments.
