Role Overview
The Operator Helper in Packaging plays a crucial role supporting the operation and maintenance of packaging machinery within the Packaging Department. Working primarily during 12-hour night shifts, this position ensures products are efficiently and safely packaged, adhering strictly to quality, safety, and regulatory standards. Collaboration with the Packaging Machine Operator is essential for smooth machinery functioning.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Packaging Machine Operator with setup, adjustments, and operation of packaging equipment including loading work-in-progress (WIP) and packaging materials.
- Monitor packaging machinery for issues such as jams or malfunctions and support minor repairs or adjustments when necessary.
- Package finished products into cases and organize cases onto pallets, including serving as backup during Operator breaks.
- Manage packaging materials by replenishing supplies and utilizing inventory systems to ensure accurate tracking and safe usage.
- Inspect packaged items for quality compliance; handle opening and rework of packages that do not meet standards.
- Maintain clean and safe work areas to promote a hazard-free environment.
- Support changeover processes by assisting with equipment disassembly, sanitation, and reassembly following established protocols.
- Adhere rigorously to all Safety and Food Safety/Quality policies. Report incidents promptly and actively participate in root cause analyses (RCAs). Identify and escalate potential risks to supervisors. Complete all required training within deadlines.
Qualifications and Skills
- Previous consistent employment history in manufacturing or equipment-centric environments, preferably in food production, with exposure to repetitive and physically demanding tasks.
- Preferred certifications include Forklift operation, Safe Quality Food (SQF) training, and Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) training.
- Proficiency in reading, understanding, and writing basic instructions and procedures in English or Spanish.
- Ability to work independently using problem-solving, organizational, analytical, and communication skills to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Strong interpersonal skills to professionally communicate with operators, leadership, and colleagues.
- Preferred experience with computers, particularly D365 (Microsoft) and Redzone (Apple) software.
- Capability to work in a food processing setting, often in hot and dusty conditions around mechanical equipment.
- Physical capability for regular heavy lifting up to 50 pounds, prolonged standing and walking on concrete floors, use of stairs, and repetitive hand, arm, and shoulder movements.
- Ability to operate powered industrial vehicles.
Compensation
Starting pay is $19.35 per hour with a $2 shift differential for night shifts. Following successful training and skills verification, pay increases to $20.10 per hour.
