Role Overview

We seek a skilled 2D Layout Artist to contribute to high-caliber creative content for a premium streaming series. The artist will develop clear background layouts that align with approved staging, camera angles, character actions, and the show's visual style. Close collaboration with the Production Designer, Layout Lead, and production teams is pivotal to transform creative direction and various references into production-ready BG paint layouts.

Responsibilities

• Produce detailed environmental layouts and place props that enhance storyboards, scripts, and the overall visual language.
• Design environment structures, decorate sets, place props, and add background elements with acute attention to perspective, scale, composition, and clarity.
• Apply in-depth knowledge of environment drawing focusing on form, structure, value, and graphic shapes.
• Support the show's stylized aesthetics through clear silhouettes, attractive shape design, correct proportions, simplification, and effective visual organization.
• Utilize 3D shot references including camera views and layout renders when necessary.
• Communicate effectively regarding layout concerns with leads and production teams.
• Collaborate with Design and Animation teams to refine layouts and ensure effective production communication.
• Respond positively and constructively to design revisions and feedback.
• Manage time efficiently to meet production deadlines without compromising art quality.
• Maintain organized and production-ready files for downstream departments.

Requirements

• 2 to 5+ years in an animation art role, preferably with feature film or high-end episodic experience.
• Strong portfolio emphasizing 2D environment design and layout within concept and production art.
• Superior drawing and design skills with technical mastery of camera perspective and structural composition.
• Proficient with Adobe Photoshop and comfortable using various production references.
• Open to adopting new internal production tools and workflows.
• Positive and collaborative working style, embracing constructive feedback.
• Legal eligibility to work in Canada.

Preferred Qualifications

• Traditional painting abilities.
• Familiarity with 3D production concepts including camera setups and layout renders.
• Experience in 2.5D, CG character, hybrid animation, or digital matte painting pipelines.
• Knowledge of tracking software such as Flow Production Tracking.
