About the Role
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Central Union Mission is a senior executive position reporting directly to the President & CEO. This role is based in Washington, DC, overseeing the organization's six facilities within the DMV region. The COO is entrusted with ensuring the effective operation of the organization through strategic planning, project management, legal oversight, and cross-departmental collaboration. This position requires development and implementation of strategies and internal controls to manage expenditures, reduce risks, and promote efficient resource utilization to meet and exceed donor and board expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead strategic planning initiatives and provide daily operational management.
- Handle legal affairs and contracts while managing major projects and organizational growth.
- Collaborate closely with Finance and Administration teams.
- Directly oversee administration of the NOVA facility and support the senior leadership team as needed, serving as a backup to the CEO.
- Manage inspections, regulatory compliance, IT systems including Mission Tracker, and oversee fleet maintenance and registration.
- Maintain safety, security, fire systems, and risk management programs.
- Partner with the VP of Finance and Administration on capital improvement priorities and evaluate third-party service providers for cost and value.
- Approve invoices, ensure vendor service quality across all sites, and oversee mail logistics.
- Supervise the Maintenance Director and Operations Manager to ensure cleanliness, facility maintenance, preventive measures, and smooth kitchen operations under Food Service management.
- Ensure contractor work orders are tracked and payments are processed, minimizing disruption to operations.
- Complete additional duties as assigned.
Candidate Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Non-Profit Management, or a related field is required.
- At least ten years of leadership experience in operations, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
- Proven expertise in strategic planning, staff oversight, multitasking, and subject matter knowledge relevant to the role.
- Exceptional attention to detail, interpersonal, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Competency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Commitment to and alignment with Central Union Mission’s mission and Statement of Faith is mandatory, including being an active member of a local Christian church.
