About Galetech Group
Galetech Group is an integrated renewable energy and sustainability services company owned by Irish interests, employing about 150 staff. The group specializes in the development, construction, operation, and maintenance of wind and solar energy projects, affordable and social housing through its Galetech Sustainable Living business, and offers construction, planning, and measurement services across Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Great Britain. The Nairobi office is a permanent branch of the group.
Position Overview
We are enhancing our estimating team and seek a skilled Quantity Surveyor or Estimator to join our Nairobi office. This is a full-time, permanent, office-based role reporting to the Senior Estimator located in Ireland. The Senior Estimator supervises tender pricing by reviewing measurements, risk assessments, and final approvals. The person in this role will independently manage assigned work streams, providing accurate and detailed quantity measurements that form the foundation of our tenders.
Key Responsibilities
- Generate comprehensive quantity take-offs from architectural, structural, civil, and electrical drawings.
- Prepare and update bills of quantities using NRM or SMM measurement standards.
- Create bills of materials for solar PV and electrical components based on specifications and datasheets.
- Develop and maintain subcontractor and supplier comparison schedules, standardizing quotes based on scope.
- Manage and refresh internal cost and rate databases.
- Compile tender documentation packages ensuring timely submissions.
- Perform quantity validations and value engineering on shortlisted options.
- Identify and highlight discrepancies, missing scopes, or conflicts in drawings and specifications promptly.
- Contribute to projects in residential housing, solar PV and battery storage, and modular/offsite construction across Ireland and the UK.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, Building Economics, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
- Four to eight years of post-qualification experience in estimating or quantity surveying within contracting or cost consultancy environments.
- Proven ability to independently produce accurate and defensible bills of quantities from drawings.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting complex technical drawings and specifications across multiple disciplines.
- Excellent command of written English and the ability to produce clear, organized documentation.
Technical Proficiencies
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including structured cost models, functions (lookup, reference), pivot tables, and data validation.
- Experience with digital take-off tools such as CostX, Bluebeam Revu, Cubicost, PlanSwift, or equivalents.
- Competency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD) for navigation, measurement, and analysis of drawings.
- Preferred: familiarity with Power Query, Power BI, model-based measurement software like Revit or Navisworks, and knowledge of SQL or Python for cost data manipulation; experience with AI-assisted tools for document and drawing review is advantageous.
Additional Desired Attributes
- Experience working on European projects or with European clients, standards, and supply chains.
- Understanding of UK or Irish measurement conventions and contract documentation.
- Membership or eligibility for registration with BORAQS.
- Experience estimating costs for electrical, M&E, or renewable energy packages.
- Background in modular, precast, or offsite construction methods.
Working Style
This role requires a highly self-motivated individual able to work independently with periodic guidance from the Senior Estimator, who works part-time. The successful candidate should be able to manage their workload effectively against firm tender deadlines, work from written instructions, consolidate questions appropriately, and document assumptions clearly. The Nairobi time zone allows strong overlap with the Irish office hours.
Benefits and Opportunities
- Direct guidance and mentorship from a Senior Estimator with over fifteen years of European construction industry experience.
- Exposure to Irish and UK cost measurement practices, contract formats, and renewable energy cost modelling.
- Opportunities for travel to Ireland for training, project familiarization, and collaboration, with travel, accommodation and visa expenses covered.
- Structured career advancement prospects within the growing Nairobi estimating team.
- Statutory employment benefits, medical coverage, and leave entitlements.
- Permanent employment within a well-established international organization, not limited to project duration.
- Potential for future assignments or internal transfers in Europe.
- Galetech Group is committed to equal opportunity employment and encourages applications from all qualified individuals.
