About Mastercard and the Role

Mastercard is a global technology company powering economies and enabling people in over 200 countries. Our mission is to support a sustainable economy where all can thrive by providing secure, simple, and intelligent digital payment solutions worldwide. Our technology, partnerships, and services help individuals, businesses, and governments unlock their full potential.

The Business Experimentation and Optimization (BE&O) teams within Mastercard’s Services division develop cutting-edge software that empowers business users globally to make informed, data-driven decisions through advanced analytics and experimentation capabilities. As we enhance our product suite and modernize our technology infrastructure, we are pioneering scalable, cloud-native solutions for our customers.

Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Lead Software Engineer to spearhead the design, architecture, and development of our next-generation experimentation platform. You will play a pivotal role in shaping system architecture and addressing non-functional requirements including scalability, performance, security, and reliability to ensure our solutions meet superior engineering standards.

As a technical leader, you will guide cross-functional teams to build scalable APIs, services, and analytic functions on platforms like Databricks and cloud environments such as AWS and Azure. This role involves close collaboration with global teams, mentoring engineers, and driving engineering excellence through best practices in software development, observability, and continuous delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the creation of advanced cloud-native services and frameworks facilitating critical data-driven decisions for major organizations.
  • Develop scalable, high-performance applications by advancing data analytics capabilities and deploying robust APIs and services on AWS or Azure cloud infrastructure.
  • Define technical vision and roadmap for web-based data and analytics applications, integrating modern technologies and architectures to continuously improve product functionality.
  • Collaborate with other lead engineers for platform-wide alignment, scalability, and sustainable evolution.
  • Make strategic architecture and design choices, conduct code and design reviews, and ensure adherence to software engineering best practices such as clean code, security, testing, and performance optimization.
  • Coordinate across globally distributed teams to deliver features promptly and effectively in an agile environment.
  • Modernize and optimize systems for scaling data volumes and users through a service-oriented architecture leveraging AWS/Azure cloud scalability.
  • Mentor engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, learning, and technical excellence.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

  • Over 8 years of software engineering experience in agile settings with a proven history of delivering large-scale, high-performance full-stack applications.
  • Proficient in developing microservices and RESTful APIs, with experience in relational and distributed databases.
  • Expertise in cloud platforms (AWS and/or Azure), containerization technologies like Docker, and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes.
  • Experience with big data tools, especially Databricks and Spark or PySpark, for building data pipelines and performing large-scale data processing.
  • Ability to convert product management requirements into scalable technical designs incorporating non-functional needs.
  • Hands-on knowledge integrating Generative AI technologies in software development to enable intelligent automation, code generation, or enhanced user experiences.
  • Proven leadership skills in managing engineering teams or complex projects, making key architectural decisions, and mentoring developers.
  • Experience leading modernization efforts transitioning monolithic legacy systems to modern microservice architectures.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of collaborating across diverse global teams and adapting strategies in dynamic, ambiguous environments.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline; advanced degrees are advantageous.
