Job Overview
The Coder Trainee is responsible for the precise coding of all diagnoses and procedures to ensure accurate billing and proper statistical recording using ICD-9-CM and CPT coding systems. The role involves reviewing outpatient and emergency room documentation, verifying medical necessity, and consulting with physicians as needed. Additionally, the coder monitors unbilled outpatient accounts and performs computer-based tasks related to coding accuracy.
Work Schedule
The standard shift runs Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with a progression toward remote working arrangements.
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma is mandatory; enrollment or certification as RHIT or CCS is preferred.
- Holding or willingness to obtain AHIMA certification within one year of training is expected.
- Strong computer proficiency and typing skills, including familiarity with office devices such as microfilm readers and printers.
- Good understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and medical specialty areas.
- Ability to interpret various handwriting styles with keen attention to detail and work independently.
- Competence to manage stressful situations maturely and professionally, along with problem-solving skills to improve work processes.
- Physical capacity to meet basic fitness requirements such as bending, stooping, standing, and sitting for prolonged periods to manage medical records efficiently.
- Capability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity are required.
- Normal vision and hearing are necessary, with no color blindness and the ability to differentiate letters and numbers correctly.
