Controller

Overview

The Controller will be accountable for managing the entire accounting operation within the company, including financial reporting, cash management, and enforcing internal controls. This role oversees the monthly close process, project-related financial accounting, construction accounting, and routine accounting activities. It also involves providing insightful financial analysis to the senior leadership team. The successful candidate will have strong technical accounting expertise paired with sound business judgment, thriving within a dynamic construction environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee the comprehensive monthly close activities.
• Generate precise monthly financial statements consistently.
• Ensure maintenance of balance sheet reconciliations and other necessary supporting documentation.
• Administer accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll activities, and general ledger transactions.
• Handle construction accounting tasks including job costing, work-in-progress schedules, retainage, billing variances, and accrued project expenditures.
• Enhance and implement accounting policies, internal controls, and financial reporting processes.
• Collaborate with external parties such as auditors, tax consultants, banking institutions, and insurance providers.
• Provide management and ownership with clear, actionable financial insights and analysis.
• Help develop scalable accounting frameworks to support company growth.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline is required.
• At least two years of progressive accounting experience, including involvement in or full oversight of monthly close processes.
• Strong comprehension of accrual accounting and GAAP guidelines.
• Experience in preparing financial statements and reconciling balance sheets.
• Familiarity with general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll systems.
• High attention to detail with excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to communicate complex financial ideas effectively to individuals without financial backgrounds.
• Advanced skills using Microsoft Excel.
• Capacity to manage numerous priorities while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced work setting.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential is highly desirable.
• Over three years of accounting experience within construction, general contracting, or project-based industries.
• Background in cash flow forecasting and working capital management.
• Experience using ERP or construction-focused accounting software platforms.
• History of supporting external audit processes and cooperation with tax advisory services.

Compensation

The employer is dedicated to equitable pay practices. The annual salary range for this role is between $90,000 and $110,000, supplemented by an annual performance-based bonus and benefits as an employee-owner. Actual compensation will consider factors like candidate experience, skills, credentials, and geographic location. The role also qualifies for variable pay schemes including short- and long-term incentives.

Physical Requirements and Workplace Environment

• This position involves regular verbal communication and auditory processing; routine use of hands for object handling and controls; frequent standing and walking; occasional stooping, bending, or reaching overhead; and the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
• The role is primarily computer-based requiring prolonged sitting, close vision, and focus adjustment.
• Travel commitments could be up to 80%, and holding a valid Driver’s License is necessary.
