Position Overview
We are looking for a highly capable Data Engineer to create advanced Inventory Optimization Models aimed at reducing overall inventory quantities while limiting excess stock and obsolescence. You will join Tesla’s Supply Chain Optimization team, which drives strategic initiatives and continuous improvements across the company’s Global Distribution Network. This role requires collaboration with Material Planning, Logistics, Finance, Warehouse Operations, and Service Operations teams, and calls for a strategic, business-minded, proactive, and analytical approach.
Deep understanding of sourcing, systems, planning, and fulfillment processes is crucial to develop models that generate meaningful business impact. The role entails juggling multiple projects that span department-level and global responsibilities, requiring both big-picture strategic thinking and detailed operational execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deploy production-ready multi-echelon inventory optimization models to lower inventory levels, minimize surplus and obsolescence, and enhance service levels across Tesla's worldwide distribution network.
- Create and integrate Digital Twin technologies consolidating inbound supply, outbound demand, logistical constraints, warehouse capacity, and network topology for near-real-time inventory insights and decision support.
- Design, maintain, and operate end-to-end production machine learning pipelines incorporating CI/CD, model versioning, and orchestration for scalable, modular, and high-performance inventory optimization systems.
- Implement intelligent inventory management tools including demand signal detection, stockout risk alerts, and exception-driven workflows.
- Refine multi-model systems integrating demand sensing, lead time fluctuations, supplier dependability, and service requirements to boost forecast accuracy, cut inventory carrying costs, and support enterprise-scale throughput.
- Conduct extensive what-if analyses and stress testing to assess inventory strategies, measure effects on cost and operational efficiency, detect supply bottlenecks and resiliency issues, and derive actionable insights.
- Effectively translate complex quantitative data into clear reports and visualizations to guide leadership decisions balancing inventory investments, service levels, and operational complexity at a global scale.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, or a closely related discipline.
- Strong mathematical foundation with expertise in algorithms and optimization methods.
- Demonstrated experience in designing, delivering, and scaling enterprise-level AI/ML solutions including production model deployment and integration into business workflows ensuring high reliability and performance.
- Advanced knowledge of large language models, autonomous AI agents, prompt engineering, and AI frameworks such as LangChain and LlamaIndex.
- Proficient in Python and SQL programming and familiar with libraries like NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, and PyTorch.
- Experience building full-stack applications using Django, Java services, and React, alongside strong skills in RESTful API design and service-oriented architecture integration.
- Familiarity with MLOps practices including CI/CD pipelines, model monitoring, containerization with Docker, and orchestration using Kubernetes.
Compensation and Benefits
- Competitive annual salary ranging from $96,000 to $144,000 plus cash and stock awards.
- Medical insurance plans with options that have zero payroll deductions.
- Support for family-building, fertility, adoption, and surrogacy.
- Dental and vision plans including orthodontics with options requiring no paycheck contributions.
- Health Savings Account contributions from the company when enrolled in eligible plans.
- Flexible Spending Accounts for healthcare and dependent care.
- 401(k) plan with employer matching and employee stock purchase options.
- Company-paid basic life and accident insurance, along with short-term and long-term disability coverage.
- Employee assistance, sick leave, vacation, paid holidays, and flexible time options.
- Childcare backup and parenting resources as well as wellness programs including weight loss and tobacco cessation.
- Commuter benefits, employee discounts, and voluntary insurance options like critical illness and accident.
- Additional programs such as Tesla Babies.
