About Homeless X Media

Homeless X Media is an independent, reader-supported digital platform dedicated to sharing unvarnished human experiences and street-level realities. Originating from Tamie Media, it serves as a lasting home for stories that mainstream, corporate media often neglects or excludes. The platform aims to provide unfiltered and fact-checked journalism focusing on community issues, cultural changes, and human endurance, with a strong emphasis on accuracy and transparency. It fosters community involvement through a "Digital Town Square" format that encourages respectful and moderated dialogue, making it a trusted source for genuine, independent news that explores deeper truths beyond surface appearances.

Role Overview

The Editor is responsible for managing the editorial workflow from initial ideas through to publication, ensuring that every piece aligns with Homeless X Media’s commitment to independent and candid storytelling. This includes reviewing and editing submissions, verifying facts, preserving consistent style and tone, and working closely with writers and contributors to enhance story development and presentation. The Editor also oversees the content schedule, orchestrates the coverage of community-centered topics, and offers constructive critiques to uphold rigorous journalistic quality. This is a full-time, on-site position based in Kampala, requiring regular office presence and active collaboration with the media team and community stakeholders. Additionally, the Editor will help formulate editorial guidelines and promote engagement through clear and accessible content delivery.

Qualifications

  • Exceptional skills in editing and proofreading, ensuring clarity, precision, and uniformity in all content.
  • Expertise in journalistic writing, narrative shaping, and headline formulation.
  • Experience in fact-checking, verifying sources, and applying ethical standards, especially concerning community and human-interest features.
  • Competence in managing editorial processes, including content planning, scheduling, and teamwork with writers, photographers, and digital producers.
  • Strong knowledge of digital media, including publishing platforms, basic SEO, and audience engagement strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills adept at working inclusively with diverse perspectives.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, or comparable practical experience.
  • Proven commitment to independent journalism, community-focused storytelling, and gender-neutral, non-discriminatory editorial standards.
  • Familiarity with or experience covering East African or Kampala-based communities is a plus.
