Role Overview
The Estimator position is responsible for converting project opportunities into comprehensive priced bids. Reporting to the Lead Estimator, this role entails daily estimating tasks such as conducting quantity takeoffs, developing pricing structures, coordinating with subcontractors, and assembling bid packages for the company's project pipeline. This role is critical in establishing Genesis's estimating operations in Alberta, operating remotely from Alberta with quarterly visits to the Kelowna headquarters. A structured 90-day onboarding program supports progression towards independent bid preparation with review by the Lead Estimator.
Key Responsibilities
- Compile thorough bid packages for assigned projects, adhering to Genesis's pricing methods, templates, and standards.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and consulting engineer documents.
- Develop labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor cost build-ups utilizing Genesis's pricing data.
- Analyze drawings and specifications to detect scope assumptions, exclusions, and ambiguities to mitigate risks.
- Request and evaluate quotes from approved subcontractors and suppliers, providing recommendations.
- Address bid clarification queries from clients, general contractors, and engineers for assigned bids.
- Represent Genesis during pre-bid meetings and site walkthroughs, providing technical and pricing input.
- Submit completed bid packages to the Lead Estimator for review and pricing finalization.
- Engage in post-award margin reviews to improve estimation methodologies.
- Facilitate smooth transition from bid to project kickoff with the regional Project Manager for awarded contracts.
Qualification Criteria
- At least three years of estimating experience within building controls, BMS, mechanical, electrical, or related construction trades.
- Knowledgeable about construction practices, materials, and labor costs specific to the Alberta market.
- Capability to interpret construction blueprints, specifications, and engineering drawings accurately.
- Strong analytical abilities, with precise attention to detail and mathematical competency.
- Proficient in estimating software such as Procore, Bluebeam, Sage Estimating, or similar tools.
- Effective communication skills, capable of bridging technical and client communications.
- Negotiation skills with sound judgment in subcontractor selection and bid evaluation.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently from a remote location while maintaining disciplined communication with headquarters.
- Dedicated home office setup with reliable high-speed internet; residing in Greater Calgary is preferred.
- Possession of a valid Canadian driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal education in construction management, engineering, or related discipline.
- Previous estimating experience specifically within controls trade or BMS projects.
- Established relationships with mechanical contractors, consulting engineers, and building owners within Alberta.
Compensation
The position offers an annual salary ranging from $80,000 to $95,000 based on experience.
