Role Summary
The Principal Mechanical Engineer position calls for a seasoned engineering professional to offer technical leadership over a variety of energy and infrastructure projects. This influential senior position will own mechanical and balance-of-plant engineering responsibilities from the tender phase through design, execution, and commissioning phases. The role includes setting engineering standards, managing design risk, and ensuring outcomes are safe, reliable, and commercially sound for both traditional and emerging energy technology projects.
Primary Responsibilities
- Serve as the key technical authority on mechanical and balance-of-plant engineering matters within ESS.
- Lead engineering efforts across all stages of projects including tendering, design, execution, and commissioning.
- Develop and uphold mechanical engineering standards, processes, and design risk mitigation strategies.
- Support delivery of diverse energy technology solutions, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), transformers, grid systems, and data center infrastructure.
- Ensure adherence to relevant industry standards, codes, and technical requirements.
- Provide expert engineering insight for tenders encompassing technical reviews and risk evaluations.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to achieve seamless integrated system outcomes.
- Work jointly with the Principal Electrical Engineer on decisions requiring cross-disciplinary technical expertise.
- Act as the escalation point for challenging or high-risk technical concerns.
Candidate Profile
- Holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Registered professional engineer status in Queensland (RPEQ) and Victoria (CAV).
- Extensive experience in power generation, rotating machinery, or complex industrial plant systems.
- Strong familiarity with balance-of-plant systems, mechanical design, and supporting auxiliaries.
- Proven background contributing to tender preparations, design evaluations, and project execution phases.
- Skilled in technical decision-making and managing design-related risks.
- Knowledgeable in safety-focused engineering approaches such as SiD, HAZOP, and FMECA.
- Capable of leading through collaboration and technical authority.
- Experience with new energy transition technologies like BESS or electrical grid infrastructure is a significant plus.

- Travel commitment: Approximately 8 to 10 weeks annually with site deployment allowances.
