About the Role
The Program Assistant for Peacebuilding supports the Peacebuilding team by conducting research, drafting policy documents, participating in meetings, and representing the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL). This is a full-time position through July 2027 focused on developing advocacy skills and gaining insight into the legislative process and policy change communications.
Role Mission
This fellowship aims to provide young adults an entry point into careers in policymaking and advocacy in Washington, DC, welcoming both newcomers and those seeking to broaden their skills. Candidates should align with FCNL's core values, including promoting a war-free world, environmental restoration, equity and justice, and fulfilling individual potential. Diversity in ethnicity, religion, and race is valued.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with advocacy efforts by lobbying Congress and mobilizing grassroots support to influence legislative action on peacebuilding issues.
- Support outreach initiatives by organizing campaigns that empower citizens nationwide to engage with elected representatives.
- Compose and edit action alerts, blogs, policy briefs, and background reports to update constituents and reflect FCNL’s stance to policymakers.
- Conduct research by attending congressional hearings and coalition meetings and analyzing related documents.
- Integrate faith-based values into advocacy work promoting peace and justice.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Commitment to an 11-month term from September 2026 through July 2027 with eligibility to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
- Proven research, analytical, and written communication skills.
- Strong interest in a career focused on lobbying, public policy, or advocacy.
- Highly motivated with ability to manage multiple deadlines effectively.
- Proactive and responsible work approach.
Preferred:
- 1-2 years’ experience in public policy analysis, community organizing, lobbying, peace education, or social activism.
- Familiarity with Quorum or similar advocacy software is advantageous.
- Understanding of congressional procedures.
- Collaborative and problem-solving mindset.
Commitments & Expectations
- Reside within commuting distance to Washington, DC for the fellowship duration.
- Participate fully in the fellowship; secure own housing as it is not provided.
- Engage with Quaker communities by visiting a Quaker Meeting to connect with faith-based networks and understand Quaker practices.
- Attend in-person events including the Annual Meeting/QPPI conference in November 2026 and the Spring Lobby Weekend in March 2027.

- An hourly wage of $24.85 based on a 37.5-hour workweek.

Work Schedule
This is a full-time, non-exempt role primarily based in the Washington, DC office, with options for telework on certain days. Office presence may increase during key legislative or coalition activities. Attendance at major conferences is required.
