About the Role

Kobalt Music, a forward-thinking global music and technology company, is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Copyright Assistant to join their Sydney team. This full-time, permanent position involves hybrid working with three days onsite. The successful candidate will support the management of global song registration processes, ensuring the accurate and timely registration of music repertoire for Australia and New Zealand. This role is essential in facilitating royalty payments to songwriters and publishers as their compositions are performed live, aired on radio, or streamed digitally.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and sustain positive relationships with Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) and Collective Management Organizations (CMOs) across the Asia-Pacific region, mainly with APRA AMCOS.
  • Collaborate across multiple time zones with Kobalt Copyright teams located in Hong Kong, London, and the US, upholding best practices for song and agreement registrations and resolving disputes.
  • Communicate with societies, publishers, and other stakeholders in Asia-Pacific to assert claims over Kobalt's music repertoire.
  • Work alongside the global Writer & Publisher Relations team to manage client accounts efficiently, including registration submissions, dispute handling, and catalogue upkeep to support accurate royalty tracking.
  • Identify registration delays or issues that could affect clients, develop resolution strategies, and execute solutions following society rules and distribution protocols.
  • Participate in side projects such as compiling song charts for internal teams.

Qualifications and Skills

  • While prior music publishing experience is not mandatory, a genuine interest in copyright and music publishing is essential.
  • Proven administrative skills with experience in data management, particularly with Excel and numerical data analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently with strong attention to detail, organization, and time management.

Additional Assets

  • Proficiency in written and spoken Cantonese and/or Mandarin is advantageous.
  • Experience interacting with rights management organizations, publishers, or rights holders.
  • Comfort working in international teams across different time zones.
  • Interest in music rights, royalty processes, and technology-based platforms.

Performance Milestones

  • Within 3 months: Gain familiarity with Kobalt's copyright systems and registration procedures; begin supporting registrations and learning APRA AMCOS processes; build professional relationships within the teams.
  • Within 6 months: Confidently manage registration workflows, liaise with societies and publishers, and start independently resolving registration queries.
  • Within 12 months: Become a reliable team member handling all registration activities for Australia and New Zealand, maintaining industry relationships, and ensuring precise royalty management.

Key Behavioural Traits

  • Meticulousness in handling registration, agreements, catalogue data, and numerical information.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills to juggle multiple deadlines effectively.
  • Persistence and adaptability to follow up on queries and adjust to evolving processes and priorities.

Interview Process

  • An initial screening call with recruitment personnel.
  • Interviews with the hiring manager and copyright team members.
  • Potential task or case study tailored to the role.
  • Final interview stage followed by feedback at every phase.

Additional Information

Applicants must be authorized to work in Australia. Background checks will be conducted upon acceptance of any offer. Kobalt Music is firmly committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and encourages applications from people of all identities and backgrounds.
