Job Overview

The BBC World Service is seeking an Assistant Editor to join its Abuja-based BBC Hausa team. This is a permanent, full-time position focused on transforming the service into a digital-first, video-led platform aimed at reaching a younger, more digitally engaged Hausa-speaking audience across West Africa and the global diaspora.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the digital transformation of BBC Hausa into a video-centric news service fostering high editorial standards, accountability, respect, and continuous learning within the team.
  • Commission and produce original journalism including exclusives, investigations, and explainers tailored for digital distribution.
  • Collaborate closely with the editorial leadership in Nigeria to harmonize priorities, optimize coverage across services, and minimize content duplication.
  • Develop and execute a data-driven video strategy focused on expanding reach, particularly among younger and female viewers.
  • Utilize audience insights, analytics, and platform trends to guide commissioning, distribution, and editorial choices ensuring content relevance and competitiveness.
  • Promote a performance-oriented culture by helping journalists understand engagement drivers and leverage data to enhance their work.
  • Oversee integration of AI tools for research, translation, transcription, editing, and optimization while maintaining editorial integrity.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Proven leadership experience managing journalism teams and cultivating a productive, high-achieving environment.
  • Established success in commissioning and delivering impactful digital journalism with a keen understanding of audience engagement dynamics.
  • Expertise in crafting and implementing data-led video growth strategies with quantifiable audience impact.
  • Advanced skills in analytics, search optimization, and platform performance interpretation to inform editorial decisions.
  • Fluency in Hausa, including an in-depth understanding of its tone, nuances, and audience expectations.
