Job description
Role Overview
Student Roost is seeking a caretaker for its student housing site at Hillfort House in Brighton. This position focuses on keeping the building safe, functional, and well-presented, while also helping residents feel supported and at home.
Pay and Working Pattern
The role pays £26,227.50 per year, which works out to £13.45 per hour. The average schedule is 37.5 hours each week, spread across 5 days out of 7, with shifts running from 8:00am to 8:00pm.
Key Duties
- Carry out routine health, safety, and compliance checks across the building.
- Handle reactive maintenance and minor repair tasks.
- Support grounds upkeep and external area maintenance.
- Assist with redecoration and general presentation work.
- Use digital tools and mobile systems to record information, reports, and compliance actions.
- Help manage debt-related processes where required.
- Escort external contractors to the relevant areas within the building.
What the Employer Offers
- An inclusive and encouraging workplace culture.
- Opportunities to build a career and grow within the organisation.
- Strong team environment and day-to-day support.
- Benefits designed to support employees.
Candidate Profile
The employer is looking for someone with the right approach as much as the right background. You should be comfortable working with people, handling practical maintenance issues, and staying organised in a fast-moving environment.
Additional Information
Applicants need to be friendly, approachable, and able to build positive relationships with residents. The role suits someone who can deliver a strong resident experience by dealing with maintenance issues directly and efficiently. You should work well in a team, adapt quickly to new systems and mobile apps, and communicate clearly. A careful approach to process and health and safety is important. The position also involves hands-on, messy tasks such as clearing drain blockages and managing bin stores, so resilience is essential. A practical, solutions-focused mindset is needed.
Electrical training will be provided. Any extra maintenance qualifications are welcome but not required. Successful candidates must pass a DBS check. Student Roost also notes its commitment as a Disability Confident Committed Employer, with a focus on an inclusive, diverse, and supportive workplace.
