Where you'll work
Job description
About the role
As a Customer Delivery Driver, you will represent Tesco on the road and deliver groceries to customers across a wide area, from Lands' End to John O'Groats. The role is customer-facing and goes beyond simply driving: you will support people at their homes, provide friendly service, and help make each delivery a positive experience.
The job is practical, active, and varied. Every shift can be different, and customers may need help in many ways. Much of the day is spent working independently while out on deliveries, with managers and colleagues available at the base whenever support is needed.
Tesco welcomes applicants from all backgrounds, whether you are seeking flexibility, stability, or a new career direction.
Availability window
The current availability requirements are:
- Sunday: 09:00 to 19:00
- Tuesday: 09:00 to 19:00
- Saturday: 09:00 to 19:00
Contracted hours will be scheduled within these windows. Shift times are shared three weeks in advance. If your availability is close to, but not exactly the same as, the advertised times, you are still encouraged to apply.
New starters are typically offered at least 16 guaranteed hours per week, although there are also options for those who prefer fewer hours, down to a minimum of 12 per week.
Key duties
- Deliver each customer order carefully and as part of a smooth shopping trip.
- Keep the van, trays, and surrounding work area clean, neat, and organised.
- Make sure the back yard is left tidy and free from rubbish, including collecting litter when noticed.
- Wash trays as part of the tray-cleaning process.
- Load the van as required and check that it is safe and roadworthy before heading out.
- Speak with customers about any order changes, such as short-dated items or substitutions, and offer refunds where appropriate.
- Treat every product and delivery with the same care you would give your own belongings.
- Explain clearly that customers will not pay extra for substitutions.
- Deliver orders within the customer’s booked time slot.
- Call the customer ahead of arrival if you are running early.
- Contact the store or centre if you expect to be 30 minutes or more behind schedule.
What you need
- Confidence in building positive working relationships and contributing to team spirit.
- A warm, approachable manner with both customers and colleagues, along with the habit of showing appreciation.
- The ability to respond quickly when customer needs change and to adapt well to change in store.
- Energy and drive to go beyond expectations while maintaining a work-life balance that suits you.
- A willingness to share ideas with management and colleagues to improve the store experience.
- A valid UK, EU, or EEA driving licence, either full or automatic, held for at least 12 months.
- No more than 3 penalty points on your driving licence.
Pay and benefits
The starting pay is £14.18 per hour. For stores inside the M25, the rate rises to £15.45 per hour. Depending on location, additional payments may also apply.
- Holiday entitlement starts at 20 days plus one personal day, increasing to 22 days after 12 months, plus bank holidays.
- Flexible working can be requested from day one.
- Colleague Clubcard savings include 10% off, increasing to 15% on pay day weekends, with potential annual savings of up to £2,000.
- Free wellbeing services are available to support mental, physical, and overall wellbeing.
- Life cover is provided at five times your pay, along with a pension scheme that matches contributions up to 7.5%.
- A choice of benefits is available, including discounts, shares, and cycle to work schemes.
- Uniform is supplied, along with policies designed to support colleagues through different life moments.
- Access is provided to colleague networks that bring together people from different backgrounds.
