Job description

About the role

As a Customer Delivery Driver, you will represent Tesco on the road and bring customer orders directly to homes in the Maldon area. The role is customer-facing and goes beyond driving; it is about providing a friendly, helpful service and making every delivery a positive experience.

This is a practical, active role with plenty of variety. Each shift can be different, and you will often work independently while still having the support of managers and colleagues at base when needed.

We are advertising availability windows for this role, and your contracted hours will be planned within those times. The availability windows for this position are:

  • Sunday: 09:00 to 19:00
  • Monday: 08:00 to 18:00
  • Friday: 19:00 to 23:00

The starting rate of pay is £14.18 per hour, increasing to £15.45 per hour for stores within the M25. Depending on location, extra payments may also be available.

New colleagues are typically offered a minimum of 16 guaranteed hours each week, although there may also be opportunities for those who want fewer hours, down to 12 hours per week.

Your shifts will be scheduled within the availability windows, and you will receive 3 weeks' notice of your exact working times. Tesco also welcomes applications from people whose availability is close to, but not exactly aligned with, the advertised times.

What you will do

  • Prepare the van and delivery trays so they remain clean, tidy, and well organised.
  • Leave the yard area clear, clean, and free of litter, and collect rubbish whenever you notice it.
  • Make sure trays are cleaned as part of the tray-wash process.
  • Load the vehicle as needed and check that it is roadworthy before heading out.
  • Speak with customers about any changes to their order, including substituted or unavailable items, and offer refunds where needed.
  • Handle products and deliveries carefully, treating them as if they were your own.
  • Reassure customers that substitutions will not cost them extra.
  • Complete deliveries within the customer’s chosen time slot.
  • Contact the customer ahead of arrival if you are likely to reach them early.
  • Call the store or centre if you are running 30 minutes or more behind schedule.

What you need

  • The ability to build positive working relationships and contribute to team spirit.
  • A warm, approachable manner with customers and colleagues, along with a habit of showing appreciation.
  • The flexibility to respond quickly to changing customer needs and adjust well to change.
  • Energy and motivation to go beyond expectations while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
  • A willingness to share suggestions with managers and colleagues to improve the store experience.
  • A valid UK, EU, or EEA driving licence, full or automatic only, held for at least 12 months, with no more than 3 penalty points.

Benefits

  • Holiday entitlement starting at 20 days, plus a personal day, increasing to 22 days after 12 months, in addition to bank holidays.
  • Flexible working requests available from day one.
  • 10% off shopping and 15% off on pay-day weekends, with potential savings of up to £2,000 per year through the Colleague Clubcard, plus an additional card for a family member outside your home.
  • Access to free wellbeing support covering mind, body, and life.
  • Life cover worth five times your pay and a pension scheme with matching contributions up to 7.5%.
  • A benefits package that lets you choose what suits you, including discounts, shares, and cycle-to-work schemes.
  • Uniform provided, along with policies designed to support colleagues through life’s important moments.
  • Access to colleague networks that offer a place to connect with people from different backgrounds.
