Job Overview
The Data Center Manager is responsible for overseeing and directing operations within the data center facility, safeguarding the physical infrastructure, equipment, staff, and clients. The role involves close collaboration with technical teams, sales and account managers, and vendor partners. Key duties also include customer support through facility tours and responding to inquiries, alongside the management of administrative tasks related to the data center’s smooth functioning and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise all personnel involved in data center operations, evaluating their performance regularly.
- Enforce compliance with data center and organizational procedures such as change, problem, and incident management, ensuring ongoing training and communication with staff.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and customers.
- Ensure staff comply with time tracking policies.
- Guarantee adherence to relevant safety and operational codes, including OSHA, NFPA, NEC, and ASHRAE standards.
- Manage operating and capital budgets effectively within approved limits.
- Focus on continuous improvement initiatives across all operational aspects.
- Implement and monitor standard operating and safety procedures, ensuring vendors and customers meet compliance standards.
- Handle emergency responses and coordinate resolution efforts to minimize downtime and customer impact.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of all data center functions and maintenance activities.
- Organize, prioritize, and plan various tasks even when facing conflicting deadlines.
- Collaborate productively with diverse teams across the organization to meet multiple needs.
- Provide leadership through team building, coaching, and resolution of conflicts.
- Apply and monitor the N+1 configuration concept to all critical data center infrastructure.
- Assess the condition of critical infrastructure and use risk management to prioritize maintenance and replacements.
- Operate and maintain facility automation systems and essential infrastructure effectively.
- Lead projects related to facilities and security management, data center layout and design, racking and cabling, capacity planning, vendor management, and sales support.
- Develop and oversee an annual preventative maintenance schedule.
Required Skills and Experience
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills suitable for public and individual interactions.
- Strong knowledge of data center operations including environmental, power, and capacity management.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and common management and monitoring software.
- Understanding of industry standards for security best practices and regulatory compliance.
- Familiarity with telecommunications products and service provider technologies.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities including team leadership, coaching, and decision-making skills.
Qualifications and Working Conditions
- Between 5 and 10 years of relevant professional experience.
- Work environment is primarily indoors within a typical office and facility setting.
- Regular exposure to medium voltage electrical equipment and related operational hazards.
- Routine use of hand and power tools required.
- Physical demands include frequent bending, kneeling, squatting, climbing in confined spaces, use of ladders or man lift up to 20 feet, and lifting up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
