Role overview
The Executive Director will lead research project management, support the development of research infrastructure, and guide scientific work within computing research. The role focuses on priority areas including Arabic Language Technologies, Data Security, Bioinformatics, Precision Health, and Artificial Intelligence, while strengthening collaborative research links across HBKU, within Qatar, and internationally.
Key responsibilities
As the senior leader for the function, the position is expected to oversee research initiatives, coordinate infrastructure planning, and help advance computing research activities in strategically important domains. The role also involves fostering partnerships and ensuring research efforts align with institutional goals.
Required qualifications and experience
- A PhD in a relevant hard science discipline, supported by a strong track record of publications, conference participation, presentations, and other scientific contributions.
- At least 16 years of relevant professional experience, including a minimum of 5 years in senior academic management with responsibility for R&D functions, ideally in an IT or computing setting.
- Experience mentoring PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and scientists.
- Proven experience managing annual research budgets of at least USD 15,000,000.
- Experience in fundraising, financing, or research contracting would be an added advantage.
- Background in project management.
- Strong understanding of Internet computing, bioinformatics, Arabic Language Technologies, Digital Society, and related computing research tools, procedures, protocols, and technologies.
- Knowledge of current computing trends and research and development practices in the field.
- Well-developed people management, team-building, and motivational capabilities.
- Awareness of local and international regulations related to computing research and digital society guidelines.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to prepare clear, concise reports and communications; fluency in Arabic is beneficial.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications.
