Role overview
G4S is hiring a proactive General Operative for its day shift facilities and maintenance team in Cheltenham. This is a permanent, full-time position suited to someone beginning a career in Facilities Management or an individual eager to build practical maintenance capability through structured support and training.
The role focuses on supporting planned and reactive maintenance work, dealing with defects quickly, and helping keep essential operations running smoothly with minimal disruption.
Working pattern and location
Location: Cheltenham, England, United Kingdom. The position is site-based and follows a Monday to Friday schedule, with working hours between 7:00 am and 4:00 pm. The role is 40 hours per week.
Pay and bonus details
The salary range is £28,744.19 to £30,181.40 per year. In addition, the package includes a 2.5% Golden Hello payment when employment starts and an annual retention bonus of £2,000, pro-rated for part-time staff, subject to maintaining the required clearance.
What you will do
- Carry out general planned and reactive maintenance tasks to support the Day Supervisor and engineering colleagues.
- Use a mobile tablet or PDA to pick up, manage, and close assigned work orders.
- Escort outside contractors on site in a secure and controlled manner.
- Act quickly on reported defects, faults, and client service requests.
- Keep logbooks and other records accurate and compliant with management instructions.
- Make sure planned maintenance jobs are completed within the required timeframes.
- Spot and report materials needed to finish maintenance work in progress.
- Represent G4S professionally when dealing with client and contractor contacts.
- Follow security, health, and safety rules at all times to support a safe working environment.
What the employer is looking for

- Clear written and spoken English communication skills.
- The ability to gain and keep high-level Government Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance.

Desirable experience and certifications
- Previous mechanical or electrical trade experience.
- Any relevant certificates in pipework, fire extinguisher checks, Legionella awareness, or basic plumbing.
