Role overview
This position is for an accomplished HR leader to build and run the people function for a large remote mining operation. The role is based in Brisbane, Australia, and includes regular travel to Papua New Guinea. It focuses on end-to-end workforce planning and delivery, covering recruitment, mobilisation, industrial relations, compliance, performance management, learning, and employee engagement to help the business stay operationally ready and sustain an effective workforce over time.
Key responsibilities
- Create workforce plans that match operational demand and site requirements.
- Direct hiring, onboarding, mobilisation, and employee deployment activities.
- Handle employee relations and industrial relations matters, including employment contracts, grievances, and workplace policies.
- Maintain adherence to labour laws, internal policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Put in place performance review processes, development pathways, and leadership training initiatives.
- Manage compensation, benefits administration, payroll-related inputs, and workforce reporting.
- Set up HR processes, reporting dashboards, and governance controls.
- Work closely with operational leaders, community representatives, security teams, and government stakeholders to support workforce goals.
Requirements
- At least 10 years of HR experience, ideally in mining, oil and gas, construction, or other remote operating environments.
- Demonstrated strength in workforce mobilisation, industrial relations, and HR compliance.
- Proven ability to create or lead HR functions in demanding, complex settings.
- Strong capability in leadership, stakeholder engagement, and practical problem-solving.
- A tertiary qualification in Human Resources, Business, or a closely related field.
- Experience in Papua New Guinea or a comparable jurisdiction is an advantage.
