Job description

Role overview

Wymondham College in Wymondham, England is seeking a Matron to join its boarding house team. The school is part of Sapientia Education Trust and serves more than 400 staff supporting a high-performing educational environment. The college is known for strong academic outcomes and boarding provision, and operates across an 83-acre campus with extensive facilities and accommodation.

Pay and working pattern

This is a permanent position working 38 hours per week during term time only. The salary is £25,583 per year FTE, with a pro-rated range of £23,266 to £23,673 per year, which includes holiday pay. The role is due to begin in September.

What the role involves

Matrons are a key part of the boarding house staff and help shape the care and development of the students they support. The role involves working alongside House leadership to care for both boarding and day students, with the main focus on boarders’ health, welfare and supervision in the evening, overnight and early morning periods.

You will be expected to support, follow and help put into practice college and house procedures and protocols. During duty hours, you must remain in the communal areas of the boarding house, and during silent hours you are required to sleep in designated accommodation so you can respond to calls or alarms when needed. In exceptional situations, and with permission from the House leader, you may also need to escort students off site.

The post also includes housekeeping responsibilities and the provision of initial medical support where required. You must always present yourself as a strong role model through your clothing, conduct and personal hygiene, and you will need to follow the Wymondham College Code of Conduct for Staff and Volunteers.

Person specification

The college is looking for someone who can remain composed in emergencies, relate well to young people aged 11 to 16, and handle administrative work efficiently. You should be confident taking a proactive approach to engaging students in activities, use sound judgement when managing conflict, and help maintain discipline and a positive atmosphere.

Clear and tactful communication is important, as is the ability to work well with others in a flexible team environment. The post requires someone who can manage several tasks at once, stay effective under pressure, adapt to changing routines, take responsibility for their actions, plan and organise well, and work to deadlines while meeting challenges head-on.

Benefits

Staff receive a range of non-contractual benefits, including professional development opportunities, free refreshments, free on-site parking, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, staff discounts through the benefits platform, a Cycle to Work scheme, and 24/7 access to an Employee Assistance Programme at no cost. In addition, children of staff may receive increased priority in the admissions policy for their school base after two years of continuous service.

Safeguarding and application notes

Wymondham College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and all staff and volunteers are expected to share that commitment. Applications are reviewed as they are received, so early submission is encouraged.

Applicants who believe they are suitable for the role are invited to apply through the employer’s application process.
