Outpatient Coder II

About the Role and Organization

This fully remote position is with Northwell Health, the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in the Northeast United States, serving New York and Connecticut. Northwell oversees 28 hospitals and over 1,000 outpatient centers, employing more than 104,000 personnel including over 20,000 physicians. They provide care to more than three million individuals annually across the New York metro area and nearby regions.

Primary Responsibilities

• Accurately code all outpatient medical records promptly according to departmental policies.
• Translate physicians’ verbal descriptions of diagnoses, injuries, and procedures into standardized numeric codes using ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 following established guidelines.
• Request physician or departmental clarification when documentation is incomplete, unclear, or inconsistent to ensure precise coding.
• Enter information correctly into computer systems to facilitate reimbursement and collect statistical data.
• Where applicable, independently reconcile charge data using patient schedules and billing information, resolving discrepancies to reflect actual services.
• Maintain a minimum 95% accuracy rate for ICD-10-CM diagnostic and CPT-4 procedural coding.
• Stay up-to-date with all pertinent federal, state, regulatory, and hospital-specific coding regulations.
• Apply proper coding guidelines to all cases to guarantee the accuracy of selected codes.
• Use reference materials and conduct research to support coding decisions.
• Take part in quality improvement and assurance initiatives.
• Report issues related to software or hardware promptly.
• Attend educational sessions such as webinars and conferences to maintain and enhance coding certifications.
• Exemplify the organization’s values and consistently demonstrate reliable attendance.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

• Associate degree or equivalent professional experience.
• Strong knowledge of ICD-10, CPT-4 coding systems, disease pathology, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
• Advanced understanding of Evaluation and Management (E/M) Coding guidelines.
• Between 2 to 4 years of professional medical coding experience.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Experience using coding manuals and relevant regulatory websites for coding research.
• Certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), such as CPC, CPC-H, COC, CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT, or other specialty certifications.

Additional Details

• The role involves mainly sedentary work requiring little physical exertion (up to 10 lbs of force) with pleasant working environment conditions.
• Minimal manual skills and motor coordination required.

Compensation

The hourly pay ranges from $26.48 to $50.49.
