About the Role

This opportunity allows you to contribute to the shaping of New Zealand's justice system by joining the Sector Insights team as a Principal Analyst within Ātea ā Rangi, Strategy. This fixed-term position runs until 30 April 2027. Your role will encompass providing high-level strategic leadership, expert analytical guidance, and evidence-informed insights that influence decision-making throughout the Ministry of Justice and the wider Justice Sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee intricate analytical projects aligned with strategic priorities.
  • Commission and define impactful analytical studies.
  • Advise on methodological standards and best practices.
  • Manage substantial datasets, analytical models, and outputs.
  • Produce insightful analysis to aid sector-wide decision-making.
  • Coach, mentor, and enhance the analytical expertise of colleagues.
  • Establish and sustain trusted relationships with senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Advocate for continual improvement and adoption of best practices.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Extensive experience in directing complex analysis initiatives.
  • Aptitude for translating technical findings into accessible insights for senior leaders.
  • Proven ability to foster trusted partnerships across varied groups.
  • Experience in mentoring and growing analytical capabilities within a team.
  • Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its practical implications.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification is essential.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality results in a complex public sector environment.
  • Familiarity with advanced analytical techniques, data visualization, modeling, research, and evaluations is highly desirable.

Compensation

The remuneration range is from $130,129 to $168,062 annually, with the final salary dependent on skills and experience. Exceptional candidates may be considered for salaries toward the higher end.

Additional Information

This is a fixed-term appointment until April 2027. Applications close on 26 July 2026 but may be reviewed and shortlisted sooner. The role requires working onsite in Wellington, New Zealand.
