Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade for HMP Bullingdon. The post pays £29,432 and plays an important part in keeping a busy prison operating safely and efficiently.
This is a practical, fast-moving position with a mix of desk-based tasks and hands-on duties. Typical work may include security checks and searches at the gate, handling deliveries, overseeing visitors, and monitoring phone activity and CCTV. The role can also involve physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison site.
Working pattern and travel
Shifts have fixed start and finish times, so punctual travel to and from the workplace is essential. The prison may be in a rural area with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and access to your own transport can help, although this is not always mandatory unless specifically stated.
Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence with D1 entitlement, allowing them to drive vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750 kg.
This role includes varied shift patterns, with weekend and night working as part of the normal schedule.
What the role involves
As part of the support team, you will help maintain safety, order, and smooth daily operations across the prison. The job requires calm decision-making, good communication, and the ability to stay composed in pressured situations.
You will have limited contact with prisoners compared with prison officers, though occasional interaction may occur depending on the establishment.
What you need
No formal qualifications are required. The employer is looking for someone with sound judgement, common sense, and a strong team-focused approach. This is a suitable opportunity for someone who wants to build a career in the prison service.
Training and progression
The role offers structured training and development opportunities. It can also lead to wider career progression within the prison service, including the possibility of applying for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Pay and benefits
In addition to the base salary, the employer offers:
- 25 days of annual leave at the start of employment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated on a pro-rata basis
- 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Access to the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme
Additional information
This is an opportunity to contribute to public safety and support the work carried out every day across the prison estate. The organisation describes the position as an extraordinary job suited to someone who is reliable, practical, and able to work as part of a team.
