Where you'll work

Job description

Role overview

This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Full Sutton, where you’ll help keep the prison running safely and efficiently from day to day. The work is varied and active, combining desk-based tasks with hands-on duties such as security checks, searches at the gate, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, monitoring calls, and watching CCTV.

Working environment

The role is based at a prison site and involves being part of a collaborative team. Some tasks can be physically demanding, including lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles. You may also work with prisoners occasionally, although contact is generally limited compared with prison officer roles.

Shift pattern and travel

You should expect fixed shift start and finish times, and it is your responsibility to arrive on time for every shift. The role includes a mix of weekday, weekend, and night shifts. Because some prisons are in rural areas with limited public transport, having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not mandatory unless specifically stated for the vacancy. Please think carefully about the location and your travel arrangements before applying.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are required. This opportunity may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed in stressful situations, uses common sense and good judgement, and enjoys working as part of a team. It is described as a fast-moving role that could be a strong starting point for a career in the prison service.

Career development

This role offers the chance to build practical knowledge of how a prison operates and may lead to other opportunities within the prison service, including the possibility of applying for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Pay, leave and benefits

The salary for this role is £29,432. Alongside base pay, the employer offers training and development opportunities, progression prospects, 25 days of annual leave on joining rising to 30 days after 10 years of service (pro-rated), 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 customer service apprenticeship, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Additional information

This is a public sector role with His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service. If you feel this opportunity matches your skills and interests, you can submit an application.
