Job description
About Purelend Technologies Inc.
Purelend is an innovative, early-stage company at the intersection of financial technology and artificial intelligence. The founding team is committed to transforming banking operations, starting with mortgage loan processing. We fully automate previously manual underwriting and verification tasks that traditionally took hours or days, enabling our clients to receive mortgage funding more efficiently.
Our platform is trusted and utilized by mortgage brokers and lenders across Canada, including some of the nation’s leading financial institutions. As we grow, we're seeking a dedicated full-time professional to ensure the development of impactful features prioritized effectively.
Our Commitment to AI
AI technology is deeply embedded across all company functions including engineering, infrastructure, design, customer support, and sales. We actively employ cutting-edge AI tools to maximize both quality and productivity within our compact team, and we want someone who embraces this philosophy and is eager to advance our use of AI.
Role Overview and Philosophy
Our belief is that AI drastically reduces the effort in writing code, but the greater challenge now lies in determining what to build, sharp scoping, and breaking down tasks for a small team to deliver successfully. We view the fundamental limit of software development not as typing speed but as clarity in upstream planning.
As a senior Product Engineer, you will operate at the intersection of engineering and product. You possess strong technical abilities, enabling you to author production code and confidently discuss architecture with engineering peers. However, your primary focus will be on product-related responsibilities: engaging with customers, defining valuable features, scoping precisely, and segmenting work into manageable components. Coding will be performed when it represents the highest leverage activity.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage directly with brokers, underwriters, and lender executives weekly through calls, screen sharing sessions, and office visits to understand user workflows and identify genuine needs beyond stated requests.
- Create concise briefs (one to two pages) detailing target users, the feature’s impact, minimal viable scope, exclusions, and success criteria post-launch.
- Decompose ambiguous challenges (e.g., improving income verification for self-employed borrowers) into sequential, actionable engineering tasks prioritized to maximize learning and minimize risk.
- Apply systems thinking across both software and customer workflows, recognizing component interactions, potential errors, latency, and side effects.
- Regularly write and ship production-quality code including prototypes, features, and integration layers when you possess unique insights that enhance delivery speed or quality.
- Define success metrics before feature development, monitor performance after deployment, and iteratively discontinue ineffective features while amplifying successful ones without relying solely on analysts.
Candidate Profile
- 5 to 10 years of professional experience delivering production software, having owned product features end-to-end, ideally including experience at an early-stage startup and a scaling company.
- Strong engineering background with active coding skills in languages such as TypeScript, Python, or Go. Comfortable reading, reviewing, and producing clean code regularly.
- Excellent systems thinker capable of visually mapping user workflows, identifying failure points, and understanding interdependencies as a link between product and engineering.
- Expertise in breaking down complex and unclear problems into clear, incremental units of work with well-defined priorities and scope control.
- Acute customer insight, capable of extracting critical needs through direct conversations with senior stakeholders rather than relying on surveys.
- Proficient written communication skills, producing focused briefs, decision documents, retrospectives, and customer summaries to enable strategic team alignment.
- Comfortable using data tools including SQL and product analytics platforms like PostHog or Amplitude to assess feature adoption and usage independently.
- Experienced and confident with AI technology integration, possessing both practical usage and a thoughtful perspective on the benefits, limitations, and shipping viability of AI-driven features. You actively use AI in your daily workflow to increase effectiveness.
- Mortgage industry experience is a plus but not mandatory. Willingness to immerse in broker and underwriter workflows from the outset is essential.
What We Are Not Seeking
- Engineers who prefer only coding predefined tasks without involvement in upstream scoping or customer interaction.
- Product managers lacking hands-on engineering expertise.
- Professionals disconnected from active software development unable to produce meaningful code today.
- Those who underestimate the complexity of effective product scoping, considering it a trivial task compared to coding.
Why Join Us?
Instead of treating product scoping as merely a procedural challenge, we view it as a core engineering discipline crucial for future success. The cost of code implementation continues dropping, making upstream clarity more valuable. You will be our pioneering hire focusing on this critical space, influencing feature development and company processes for years to come.
