Job description

About the Company

TRADER is a prominent Canadian provider of digital automotive solutions. Its core brands, including AutoTrader.ca, AutoSync, Dealertrack Canada, and CMS, facilitate vehicle buying, selling, and financing across Canada. TRADER is part of the AutoScout24 Group, Europe’s largest online automotive marketplace, and is working towards transforming automotive retail in Canada and beyond.

Job Overview

The Senior Data Scientist will play a crucial role within TRADER’s global Data Science team by developing and managing AI and machine learning systems integral to marketplace platforms in both European and Canadian markets. This permanent position is located in Toronto.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the entire lifecycle of machine learning (ML) and Generative AI systems in production, from problem identification and system design to deployment, monitoring, and continuous enhancement.
  • Make informed architectural and methodological choices for ML systems hosted on AWS, ensuring a balance between reliability, observability, cost management, and maintainability.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, and Business stakeholders to translate vague challenges into ML-powered product solutions with measurable results.
  • Manage and upgrade ML systems deployed across varied countries and markets, taking into account differing data characteristics, regulatory requirements, and operational constraints.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior data scientists through code reviews, design assessments, and shared responsibility for systems.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced academic degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience designing, implementing, and maintaining production-level ML systems.
  • Proficient in Python and contemporary machine learning frameworks, with demonstrated success in shipping and maintaining ML production pipelines.
  • Strong knowledge of AWS cloud services and MLOps practices, including deployment, monitoring, and scaling ML systems.
  • Practical expertise in implementing Generative AI and Large Language Models in real-world or production scenarios, understanding their advantages and limitations.
  • Ability to guide technical decisions through solid judgment and teamwork rather than authority.
  • Experience mentoring less experienced data scientists through hands-on collaboration and constructive feedback.
  • A strong commitment to ownership and accountability, adopting pragmatic trade-offs to ensure delivery and quality.

Benefits and Perks

  • Discounts for gym memberships.
  • Access to Employee and Family Assistance programs.
  • Participation in virtual wellness events.
  • Allocated budget for conferences and professional training.
  • Regular internal training initiatives.
  • Financial planning support with a pension plan featuring 3% employer matching.
  • Competitive salary package.
  • Annual incentive bonus scheme.

Compensation

The advertised base salary range is CAD 180,000 to 210,000 per year. Final compensation may be adjusted based on candidate experience, skillset, location, and prevailing market factors. The overall remuneration package may also include additional benefits, bonuses, and other employee perks.
