eGenesis is a clinical-stage biotech company focused on engineering human-compatible organs to address critical shortages. Through a proprietary genome editing platform, they remove biological barriers, introduce protective human genes, and eliminate retroviruses in source organs. Their lead product, EGEN-2784, is a genetically engineered pig kidney currently in clinical evaluation at MGH. The company is based in Cambridge, MA.
Role Overview
The Senior Director, Controller will manage eGenesis’ accounting and financial reporting during a phase of significant growth. Reporting to the VP of Finance, this position ensures the accuracy of financial statements, leads the closing process, manages audits, and scales accounting operations effectively. The role involves close collaboration with senior executives and the audit committee on complex accounting and financial matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the financial close process end-to-end, including general ledger, payables, and accruals, and deliver timely financial statements in line with U.S. GAAP.
- Act as the primary technical accounting expert, researching and documenting complex transactions such as collaborations, equity investments, clinical trial accruals, R&D, and leasing.
- Prepare and maintain complete, audit-ready financial statements and supporting schedules with accurate disclosures.
- Lead annual audits and quarterly reviews; manage external auditors, prepare PBC lists, and ensure adherence to timelines.
- Coordinate and oversee tax compliance and filings with external advisors, managing all related provisions and deadlines.
- Develop and uphold robust internal controls suitable for a company operating similarly to a public company.
- Handle equity accounting in partnership with legal and external stock plan administrators to ensure precise stock compensation and capitalization reporting.
- Manage NetSuite ERP as the financial system of record, aligning with FP&A on account structure and reporting improvements.
- Build and lead a skilled accounting team through recruitment, mentoring, and retention during growth phases.
- Collaborate with the VP, Finance on financial presentation materials, technical memos, and perform analytical support as needed.
- Assist in providing account-level historical data for long-term financial planning and investor communications.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance and CPA certification mandatory.
- Over 10 years of progressive accounting experience, with a minimum of 3 years as Controller or Assistant Controller; experience in Big 4 firms strongly preferred.
- Experience in public company accounting including financial statement ownership and audit management under public reporting deadlines.
- Background in biotech or life sciences accounting required; clinical-stage experience preferred (CRO accruals, collaboration agreements).
- Proficient with NetSuite for financial systems management.
- Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP with expertise in ASC 718 (stock-based compensation), ASC 842 (leases), and equity accounting.
- Proven capability in designing and documenting internal controls within fast-growing environments.
- Excellent communication skills to clarify complex accounting issues for varied audiences including auditors and leadership.
Compensation
The compensation range for this position is $180,500 to $233,500 annually.
