Role Overview

The Trades Worker I is tasked with performing various maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting duties at a near apprentice level across building, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical trades to maintain efficient operations at the College of the North Atlantic's Prince Philip Drive campus.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Construct and repair offices, doors, windows, glass, locks, and office furniture such as desks, bookcases, and shelving units.
• Apply plaster and paint on diverse interior and exterior wall surfaces.
• Install and replace various flooring materials, including commercial vinyl, laminate, and vinyl baseboards.
• Perform minor electrical maintenance tasks like changing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
• Install surveillance cameras along with associated data cabling, surface-mount conduit, and junction boxes.
• Conduct masonry work such as repairs, replacements, and installations of brick, concrete blocks, paving stones, ceramic floor tile, and wall tile.
• Execute small to medium renovation and construction projects to support evolving College programs and operational needs.
• Operate various power tools and equipment safely, including table saws, circular saws, and electric drills.
• Complete work orders, prepare building supply requests, and deliver materials to designated campus locations.
• Ensure all maintenance and renovation tasks comply with occupational health and safety standards.
• Occasionally operate a forklift.
• Perform annual inspections and preventative maintenance on building components and equipment as required.

Qualifications and Experience

• Completion of high school plus trade-related courses from a post-secondary institution, or status as a registered Trades Apprentice.
• Experience in building maintenance, renovations, repairs, or related trades work such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, or mechanical functions.
• Equivalent combinations of training and experience will also be considered.

Knowledge and Skills

• Familiarity with carpentry, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical trades including accepted practices, codes, and safety protocols.
• Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
• Excellent communication skills for effective information exchange.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Proficiency in managing multiple tasks and adapting to shifting priorities.
• Professionalism and strong interpersonal skills.

Conditions and Requirements

• A satisfactory recent Certificate of Conduct must be provided upon employer's request.
• Possession of a valid Newfoundland and Labrador Class 05 driver’s license.
• Verification of credentials, licenses, certifications, or professional memberships as required.
• Occasional lifting or moving of items over 50 lbs, including materials such as gyprock, furniture, and toolboxes.
• Extended periods of standing, walking, driving, and ladder climbing to perform duties.
• Work at heights with mandatory fall arrest training and recertification.
• Requirement to obtain and maintain forklift operation certification.
• Travel to multiple campuses within Newfoundland and Labrador is expected, sometimes with overnight stays up to a full work week.

Salary

Salary is set under classification CG24 with an annual range from $42,442 to $46,738.
