Job description

Role overview

The Payroll Manager will oversee a growing payroll operation and act as the main support resource for payroll specialists, associates, and assistants. This position focuses on managing the client-facing payroll workflow, maintaining service quality, and driving team performance.

Key responsibilities

  • Handle payroll processing as required and support the team with issue resolution, onboarding, client assignment, and process adherence.
  • Plan, prepare, and facilitate team meetings and training sessions.
  • Interview candidates, complete performance evaluations, and coach team members when needed.
  • Provide leadership across department initiatives and guide the team toward operational excellence.
  • Train new hires and clients on payroll processes, software, company practices, and internal policies.
  • Create and refine best practices that improve payroll accuracy and efficiency.
  • Evaluate existing payroll procedures and recommend practical enhancements.
  • Make sure payroll is completed on time and with a high level of accuracy.
  • Compile wage summaries for clients and employees covering earnings, taxes, deductions, leave, retirement savings, and benefits.
  • Coordinate with AP and tax teams to manage current-year and prior-year voids.
  • Respond to payroll questions and service requests in a timely manner.
  • Investigate payroll issues and implement suitable resolutions.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Take part in recruitment, performance reviews, compensation changes, and progressive discipline processes.
  • Lead monthly staff meetings.
  • Track CRM cases and tasks and ensure the team completes them on schedule.

Experience and qualifications

  • High school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
  • FCP or CPP certification is mandatory.
  • At least 10 years of payroll experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in PEO or ASO multi-state payroll.
  • Experience with PRISM and HR Pyramid is preferred.
