Position Overview

The Water Quality Engineer will play a vital role within the Zoological Department at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi by overseeing the performance and maintenance of Animal Life Support Systems (ALSS). This function is critical to ensuring the health and safety of animals, team members, contractors, guests, and the park’s operational success. The role involves preventive and corrective upkeep of ALSS equipment per SOPs and manuals while maintaining thorough documentation.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct scheduled preventive and corrective maintenance tasks timely.
• Operate within environmental regulations to uphold optimal life support systems and maintain water quality for animals and humans.
• Analyze system data from controls, meters, laboratories, and animal care teams to diagnose water quality or system issues.
• Apply troubleshooting methodologies relevant to ALSS expertise.
• Adhere to safe practices when handling, storing, and disposing toxic substances and hazardous waste per SOPs.
• Keep detailed maintenance logs and report updates to ALSS leadership.
• Maintain organization and cleanliness of chemical storage and workspace.
• Manage inventory for tools, equipment, and materials.
• Work safely in confined spaces using appropriate techniques and safety equipment.
• Complete required training sessions and advance professional skills.
• Perform additional duties as directed by ALSS leadership.

Technical Responsibilities

Pump Mechanic:

• Inspect, diagnose, and repair ALSS pumps, motors, hydraulics, compressors, and controls, restoring equipment to manufacturer standards.
• Analyze mechanical systems to identify cost-efficient maintenance or replacement strategies.
• Ensure continuous operation of all saltwater, freshwater, and water treatment systems.

Systems Automation:

• Conduct maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on low to medium voltage electrical systems, ozone generators, UV sterilizers, level sensors, ORP and pH probes, and related machinery.
• Install, calibrate, and maintain electronic ALSS instrumentation.
• Operate automated life support and water treatment systems.
• Install conduits and wiring needed for electrical alterations or expansions.

Filtration Mechanic:

• Monitor water quality and system trends using computer control systems, responding to alerts and deviations.
• Manage draining, filling, and isolation of habitats, pools, and waterfalls.
• Adjust and maintain water balance following corporate and regulatory standards.
• Perform maintenance and repairs on filters, pumps, valves, and piping.
• Conduct water chemistry testing, interpret results, and take corrective actions as required.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

• Diploma in a relevant technical discipline.
• At least 3 years of related professional experience or equivalent education and experience combination.
• Basic proficiency in English communication, verbal and written.
• Strong troubleshooting skills within the field.
• Familiarity with hand tools and measurement devices relevant to ALSS.
• Basic computer literacy, including Microsoft Word and Excel.

Pump Mechanic Specific:

• Mechanical/technical expertise in ALSS, public pools, or wastewater treatment.
• Knowledge of mechanics involving motors, hydraulics, centrifugal and vertical pumps, compressors, and liquid metering pumps.
• Ability to interpret pump performance curves and diagnose issues such as cavitation and vibration.

Systems Automation Specific:

• Proficient with electronic control systems and programming.
• Experience with electronic controls and telemetry instruments.
• Skills in installation, calibration, troubleshooting, and repairing control systems and instruments.
• Ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.

Filtration Mechanic Specific:

• Knowledge of operation and repair of small pumps and related equipment.
• Experience with automated controls, pneumatics, and electro-mechanical devices.
• Understanding of mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration systems in animal life support contexts.
• Ability to interpret piping and instrumentation diagrams and comprehend pipe installation.

Desirable:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Marine Engineering or similar.
• Minimum two years’ experience with aquatic life support systems in zoological or aquarium environments.
• Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems.

Additional Information

The role includes working in confined spaces, lifting weights up to 45 kg, standing for extended periods, and working shifts including nights and public holidays.
