Role Overview

Join the Ambassador Animal Team at the ABQ BioPark, an exceptional group devoted to conservation and engaging the public through diverse animal programming. This full-time position involves caring for a variety of species including birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals, while collaborating closely with the Education Team and other departments to facilitate animal encounters, conservation education, and themed programming at special events.

Key Duties

• Provide daily care and maintenance for various animals within the BioPark.
• Support curatorial and veterinary personnel as required.
• Participate in the BioPark Training and Certification Program to enhance skills and knowledge.

Educational and Experience Requirements

Education can substitute for experience based on equivalent years. Requirements vary by level:

• Zookeeper I: High school diploma or GED plus two years’ experience in exotic animal husbandry, zookeeping, or arthropod rearing; experience with AZA-accredited facilities preferred.
• Zookeeper II: High school diploma or GED plus three years’ relevant experience; must have completed Level 1 BioPark certification or possess 15 college credit hours in biology, zoology, or animal science.
• Zookeeper III: High school diploma or GED supplemented by 30 college credit hours in related fields and four years’ relevant experience; must have completed Level 2 BioPark certification or hold 15 college credit hours; scuba certification or ability to obtain within one year is required for some departments.

Additional Conditions

• Applicants must have or acquire a valid New Mexico Driver's License within 90 days of hire.
• Must obtain a City Operator’s Permit within six months.
• This is a safety-sensitive role subject to random drug and alcohol tests.

Working Environment

• Work is performed in zoo settings, involving exposure to various domestic and exotic animals, noise, animal fluids, and varying weather conditions.
• Physical tasks include standing, walking, bending, climbing, and lifting of various weights over extended periods.
