Role Overview
As a Power BI Developer, you will collaborate directly with finance stakeholders to identify reporting requirements, develop comprehensive data models, and construct Power BI dashboards that provide significant business value. Your work will involve integrating data from various sources, transforming legacy Cognos reports into Power BI, championing user adoption through training, and mentoring a Data Apprentice. Success will be measured by dashboard effectiveness, usability, and timely delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage with Finance & Controlling partners to clarify reporting needs and establish acceptance criteria.
- Prioritize dashboard projects based on impact and feasibility.
- Design, build, test, and deploy Power BI dashboards, reports, and semantic models.
- Create advanced DAX measures, KPIs, and reusable data elements ensuring accuracy and governance.
- Connect to data sources including Databricks, SQL databases, data lakes, warehouses, and Excel.
- Implement data validation, reconciliation, and unit testing before deployment.
- Produce detailed documentation covering data sources, model logic, and usage guidelines.
- Adhere to reporting standards and collaborate with the Data & MI team to maintain governance.
- Promote adoption of existing Head Office Power BI dashboards to ensure consistency and avoid duplication.
- Adapt and deploy Head Office reports for UK users, providing training and support.
- Facilitate migration and modernization of legacy Cognos reports into Power BI.
- Mentor a Data Apprentice and share BI knowledge across the Finance & MI community.
- Serve as a point of contact for Power BI dashboard queries and issue resolution.
Required Technical Skills
- Proven expertise in developing Power BI dashboards, reports, and semantic data models.
- Advanced skills in DAX including performance-focused calculations and KPI development.
- Experience in constructing robust data models with reusable business-friendly reporting layers.
- Strong proficiency in SQL for data extraction, validation, and preparation.
- Familiarity with modern data platforms such as Databricks, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Data Lake.
- Advanced Excel skills, especially valuable where structured data feeds are unavailable.
- Knowledge of data quality assurance, reconciliation, documentation, and governance practices.
- Understanding BI best practices including dashboard usability and deployment control.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with Power BI Service features such as workspaces, scheduled refreshes, and access control.
- Familiarity with Power Query, Power Automate, Power Pivot, SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive.
- Understanding of data warehousing concepts, dimensional modeling, and ETL/ELT processes.
- Prior exposure to Cognos reporting is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Experience working within finance, performance management, KPI reporting, or management information domains.
