Overview
New Zealand Ocean Technology (NZOT), a leading provider in underwater and maritime defence technology for over 40 years, now a part of EDGE Defence, supports various New Zealand agencies, including the Royal New Zealand Navy and Police. Our expertise extends to autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), diver navigation, sonar systems, and emerging autonomous surface vessels (USVs). Based at the Devonport Naval Base, we are expanding our capabilities in this rapidly growing sector.
Role Description
We are seeking a practical and skilled Service Engineer to perform maintenance, repair, testing, and operational tasks on AUVs, USVs, and associated underwater systems. This role requires proficiency both in workshop bench work and field operations, including sea-based deployments. You will collaborate closely with OEM partners and customers to ensure optimal system performance in trials, exercises, and operational deployments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead troubleshooting, repairing, servicing, and testing of underwater vehicles and related payloads, including sensors, communication equipment, and batteries.
- Conduct routine field operations such as pre-mission equipment checks, launch and recovery procedures, vehicle mission planning, and post-mission data analysis.
- Support maritime operations and trials aboard various support vessels, managing deck operations involving cranes, A-frames, and specialized launch/recovery systems, as well as beach and small boat deployments.
- Create, review, and implement service and testing documentation and plans.
- Provide training and technical assistance to operators and maintainers.
- Gather field insights and relay product enhancement recommendations to OEMs and engineering teams.
- Maintain service records, manage spare parts inventory, and handle OEM returns and RMAs.
- Support both domestic and international deployments, exercises, and long-term sustainment activities.
- Adhere to strict safety, security (ITAR/DISP), and quality standards.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in mechatronics, electrical, electronic, mechanical, or marine engineering, or equivalent trade qualification paired with extensive practical experience.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose and repair complex electro-mechanical and robotic systems, electronics, and sensor technologies.
- Familiarity with Linux and command-line environments, alongside basic skills in software troubleshooting.
- Strong organizational skills with a disciplined and safety-oriented approach to documentation and processes.
- Possession of a full New Zealand driver's license with readiness to travel and work at sea.
- Valid New Zealand passport enabling overseas work, including travel to the USA.
Preferred Attributes
- Experience with operating robotic maritime systems (AUV/UUV/ROV/USV) in commercial, research, or defense contexts.
- Hands-on experience with launch and recovery operations, including deck crane and specialized systems.
- Knowledge in subsea acoustics, sonar, underwater navigation, and communication systems.
- Background in autonomy, robotics, or related software development.
- Marine skills such as small-boat handling, diving, or other maritime trades.
- Certifications in offshore or maritime safety (e.g., sea survival, first aid).
- Prior exposure to defence, naval, or aerospace sectors.
Eligibility Requirements
Due to the sensitive nature and export-controlled equipment involved, candidates must be New Zealand citizens holding valid New Zealand passports. Eligibility to obtain and maintain a New Zealand Government security clearance, including unescorted access to the Devonport Naval Base, is mandatory. Willingness and ability to travel and deploy both domestically and internationally is required.
