The Real Time Payments (RTP) initiative is driving the worldwide shift to instant, account-to-account payment systems that offer secure, low-latency, and highly resilient services across various live markets. RTP platforms are critical financial infrastructures with high transaction volumes, stringent regulatory requirements, and demanding availability standards. Engineering efforts here strive to develop reliable, scalable, and maintainable platforms aligned with Mastercard’s enterprise standards.

Primary Responsibilities

• Design and develop small to medium features or components based on defined requirements and architectural guidelines.
• Apply established architectural patterns like microservices, event-driven messaging, and APIs consistently.
• Convert functional requirements into clean, efficient, and maintainable code.
• Contribute to design discussions and document key implementation decisions.
• Deliver complete features including development, testing, deployment, and documentation.
• Write high-quality, readable, and testable code adhering to Mastercard’s engineering standards.
• Create and maintain automated unit and component tests.
• Engage actively in code reviews by providing and receiving constructive feedback.
• Detect and resolve defects, performance, and reliability issues in owned code segments.
• Follow secure coding practices and conform to regulatory compliance requirements.
• Design software with a focus on reliability, observability, and maintainability.
• Incorporate logging, metrics, and simple alerts to support operational needs.
• Participate in production release processes and ensure operational readiness.
• Contribute to on-call rotations and support production incidents, including root cause analysis and remediation.
• Collaborate with product managers, QA, DevOps, and engineering peers to drive timely delivery.
• Communicate progress, risks, and technical challenges clearly within agile team ceremonies.
• Drive continuous improvements by reducing technical debt and enhancing platform performance and reliability.
• Develop deeper expertise in RTP platforms and the payments domain.

Desired Experience and Technical Skills

• 3 to 6 years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proven ability to independently deliver substantial software features.
• Strong foundation in software engineering principles and experience with distributed systems.
• Background working on production systems that demand high availability and reliability.
• Comfortable owning and maintaining software components throughout their lifecycle.
• Solid experience with Java and the Spring framework or comparable backend technologies.
• Familiarity with APIs, messaging systems, and persistent data storage.
• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and version control systems.
• Exposure to cloud or container-based environments is advantageous.
• Experience in payments or regulated sectors considered a plus.
