Despite billions invested in behavioral health innovations, there has been little improvement in outcomes at the population level. This is largely due to a lack of meaningful quality metrics to support value-based care in behavioral health, unlike other medical fields that have clear markers such as blood tests. Benchmark Health is addressing this critical gap by creating a novel AI-native infrastructure that realigns incentives across stakeholders, prioritizing impactful patient outcomes. As a public benefit corporation, Benchmark helps patients navigate mental health care by pairing them with dedicated Advocates who assess their needs, connect them with appropriate resources, and support them throughout their care journey. Their model is integrated with partnerships across health systems, primary care providers, and health plans. Benchmark’s AI-driven startup culture extends through its organizational design, technology, and user experience with a mission to provide better care at lower costs through responsible AI use.

In just over a year, Benchmark has secured collaborations with major health organizations and developed a scalable AI infrastructure to underpin its Advocacy care model. This approach is based on treating every patient with the care one would give a family member. The company’s founders include Dr. David Mou and Dr. Tom Insel, former director of the National Institute of Mental Health.

Role Overview

As Benchmark embarks on its next phase, it requires a senior operational leader to oversee daily business functions, build scalable systems, and act as a strategic partner to the CEO. The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will have broad responsibilities spanning Product, Clinical Operations, Data, Finance, and Human Resources.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with the CEO, board, and advisors to develop an AI-native operating system tailored to behavioral health and payor needs.
Ensure effective delivery and measurement of high-quality care across various channels, including primary care providers, payors, and health systems.
Own and scale core operations covering care management and partner implementation.
Lead product and technology efforts to build a scalable, AI-enabled clinical model by working closely with the technical team.
Maintain financial discipline and assist in fundraising initiatives.
Partner with the CEO to attract, develop, and retain a mission-driven, high-performance team supported by robust metrics.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Demonstrated experience as a senior operational leader in early-stage companies, comfortable with ambiguity and fast-paced environments.
Strong data-driven mindset with the ability to dissect business metrics and engage confidently with investors; preferably with multiple successful fundraising experiences.
Proven ability to design organizations, build teams ahead of growth, and implement systems and performance metrics to enable scaling.
Passionate about transforming the behavioral health system to improve patient outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications

Over 10 years in operations, including senior leadership at early-stage startups, ideally with exposure to behavioral health, managed care, or value-based care systems.
Track record of scaling companies through growth phases, ideally from seed to Series A or B rounds.
Experience operating autonomously in a senior role, owning outcomes without close supervision.
Healthcare or behavioral health background and familiarity with value-based care are advantageous.

Additional Information

Position is full-time.
Compensation is competitive and aligned with experience.
Location: Primarily onsite at Benchmark’s office in Needham, MA.
