Role overview
Smartly is hiring a Data Engineer to design, support, and improve the data pipelines and curated datasets that underpin reporting, analytics, and decision-making. You will partner with Data Science, Analytics, Product, and Engineering teams to keep data dependable, structured, and easy to work with.
This position suits someone who enjoys practical data work using SQL and Python and is comfortable following modern software engineering methods. You will help evolve the company’s data platform while expanding your capability in cloud data systems and engineering best practices.
The team actively uses AI-assisted development tools to work more efficiently. Prior expertise with these tools is not required, but you should be open to using, or learning to use, tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar solutions to speed up coding, testing, and problem-solving. Smartly values engineers who are curious, pragmatic, and willing to adapt the way they work as AI becomes a larger part of modern engineering.
Key responsibilities
- Create, maintain, and improve data pipelines with SQL and Python to ingest, transform, and deliver data from internal product systems and external sources.
- Build and maintain analytical datasets that are well structured and suitable for reporting, dashboards, experiments, and data science work.
- Work with analysts and data scientists to interpret data needs and turn them into reliable, reusable data assets.
- Keep an eye on pipelines and datasets, and investigate and fix issues affecting data quality or reliability.
- Help strengthen documentation, testing, and basic observability so data is easier to trust and use across the business.
- Support ongoing improvements to Smartly’s data tooling, pipelines, and engineering processes.
- Work confidently in a cloud environment and understand the basic way cloud-based data systems operate.
What the role requires
- At least 3 years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a closely related role.
- Strong SQL ability, including experience with complex and efficient queries.
- Strong Python skills, especially for transformations, automation, and pipeline development.
- Experience using Git or another version control system in a team setting.
- Familiarity with CI/CD workflows, including automated testing and deployment.
- Working understanding of cloud infrastructure concepts such as compute, storage, and permissions, preferably in a modern cloud platform.
- Experience with relational databases and analytical data stores.
- Knowledge of analytics data modelling, including fact and dimension tables.
- Comfortable taking ownership of tasks end to end with the right level of support.
- Able to collaborate well with analysts, data scientists, and software engineers.
- Curious and proactive, with a drive to improve data quality and engineering practices.
- Strong communicator who can explain data problems and solutions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
